Hi all,

What is the correct name for the tape that is placed round the groove of the wheel to seperate or protect the inner tube from the spoke holes? Is it expensive?

Thanks

Rim tape, I believe
Having a quick look it's about £2-£4 a roll

Rim tape.......lots of choice-mostly inexpensive.......some cloth based and some nylon/plastic.
Velox is a 'proper' old skool clothe type I think. Comes in various widths and diameters so tell shop whether (typically) you have mtb or road race wheels (or 29er or hybrid width road wheels etc).

Jante Velox cloth rim tape is the best. Have tried others Nutrak - terrible and a Specialised variety used by a bike shop who built a rear wheel for me albeit very poorly and the rim tape was crap as well, a plastic one by Specialised. Pity as the Specialised Armadillo Nimbus tyres I use are fabulous.

So to recap Jante Velox cloth rim tape is the best. I just bought x10 rolls of 16mm for 700C wheels and x6 rolls of 22mm for 26" wheels which should last me a very long time. Total cost £25.

I'm surprised to read someone saying Nutrak tape is terrible. I have it on three different wheels as it's the only tape the closest bike to me sells and it's never let me down. Seems to be the best of both worlds as it's cloth coated with plastic.

I've seen some terrible rim tape, plastic bands which slowly recess into the spoke holes and I even had one which looked like a strip of old inner tube !

Well I used Nutrak rim tape on a 700c wheel and within 3 weeks I had a puncture on the inside of the tube from a spoke head. Plus the edges of the tape are almost sharp and the glue that is used is horrible. They are expensive as well at nearly £3 a roll of tape. Never ever using Nutrak tapes again. Seriously Velox tape is FAR FAR superior.

Funny how people's experiences differ isn't it? One of my wheels with nutrak tape must have covered 2000+ miles worry free. I'd always choose velox if available but I would certainly use nutrak again.
