Spit or Swallow???

Before my question I would like to thank everyone for all the information I have benefited from in my time lurking on this site. I used to be an occasional cyclist with the kids but am now commuting 10 miles each way on an ancient Sun Solo road bike. (Still haven't lost the weight I would like)

Now to my question. Flying insects in the mouth, I hava had a few recently and sometimes I swallow them (extra protein for the ride) and sometimes spit them out.

What does everyone else do???

 I saw that title and for a split second thought I was on the wrong forum. In answer to your question I keep my mouth shut. If one gets in I try and spit it out, I don't like the taste of them, sometimes though you have to swallow.

I've had my run ins with this too.

One time I managed to get one out, was quite shocked when I saw it.

The other two times I was simply convinced I'd got one at the back of my throat. I spent about 10 minutes trying to force myself to be sick, in the end I gave up and nature took its course.

Problem solved. I'm still here anyway.

They weren't very big mind.

This was my train of thought until last week when on a lunchtime ride in the country I had mouth shut and therefore you breath harder through your nose and I sucked a bug up my schnozz, I almost came off... It was a far worse sensation than a quick swallow a cringe then carry on regardless. I now have a half open half closed combo that limits the size of the beasty. Wasps, bees, hornets and horse flies are a no no, but smaller stuff... why not!

Tried breathing through my nose whilst cycing but find it very difficult to keep riding.

I do get asthma with my hayfever though which restrict my breathing. I always wheeze abit after a long ride.

Hay fever is a problem for me too and summer is not fully arrived yet. I do cope better though when im semi-fit compared to when I been lazy for few months and generally unhealthy.

How's your hayfever at the moment?

Mine's just started although it's very very mild. The asthma though has been with me for abit longer. Makes me wonder how much of the asthma is brought on by hayfever and how much isn't.

Where abouts are you?

It can get real bad with hayfever. I had to go to A&E once. Was unable to walk 1 min down the road without being exhausted and unable to breath properly. The pollen was rampant, it was in Portugal.

They put me on oxygen and ventalin, took ages to clean my lungs (about 3 15min goes) and still had very limited breathing. Had to stop as my heart was beating like the clappers due to the ventalin.

Sooo... Who wants to put the "Bug Mask" for cyclists on the market?

All I want is 10% if you make more than £1million

Hey river, my hay fever is not as bad as it used to be. When I was younger I was constantly having the tablets but rarely had to use inhaler for asthma. This year is definately worse than last year as the weather has already been better than all of 2008!

I live near manchester, but work all over the country. So far I got the runny nose and must resist the itchy eyes!
