Spinning pedals

I have been doing a fair few sessions of spinning at the local gym recently. The bikes are fitted with double sided pedals. One for SPD's (which I have never seen used) and the other side with straps can any one tell me if these pedals can be used on an ordinary bike and if so where will I get them. I ask this because if they can be used on a road bike I will get a pair and use the shoes both in and out of doors.

You can get combination pedals - like the Shimano M324 - that are flat on one side and clipless on the other. They are very much like the ones on the spin bikes at my gym. I'm not sure if you can fit straps to them - looking at the picture on Wiggle I'd say you could. I'm pretty sure you could fit those plastic toe cages with straps though. Best thing would be to go and have a look in your local bike shop.

So what combination are you after ?
spd and straps ? or one of those and flats ?
Doubt you'd be able to buy duals with spd and straps as folks tend to favour one over the other.
Definitely spd ? I'ver seen posts from folks convinced that the slightly odd design of their clip
pedals implied you could also clip onto them.

it certainly looks like you could fit toeclips to M324 pedals.
however...
It may be a bit awkward threading the strap through the pedal without interfering with the clipless side
Most pedals for toeclips have a little tab on the back to make it easier to flip the pedal over to strapside upside. The clipless mechanism would probably get in the way, so flipping the pedals would be a bit more awkward.
Unlike a spin bike you are riding when trying to get the second foot in.

Another point would be that if you used the SPD side, the dangling toeclip/strap would hit the ground on occasion.

I have used toe clips for years and though I fancy trying SPD's I am not sure how I would get on with them. Hence the attraction of the combination. Though I am getting back to doing distance rides, most of my rides are under ten miles. I will have look at the 324's and then if I can not settle in to SPD mode I could always return to clips.
