I'm currently using SPD pedals and after a few months of steadily building up my pedalling prowess my knees are beginning to play up a bit. This isn't new and has been aggravated by playing other sports in the past (golf especially) and just spending too much time on my feet. Last year I had an operation on the left knee and now I'm potentially overly cautious / protective. In relation to surgery, pedals / shoes are cheap and painless.

I have heard many good things regarding Speedplay pedals and the large degree of float helping knee issues. Have people here got any experience of this and do you think this is a sensible avenue to go down ?

I want to do my research as well as possible because it's not just the cost. Virtually all other pedals other than the SPD's are also a massive pain in the back side to walk in, so I need to make sure before I try to help my knees and potentially break my neck instead.

Thanks for any help.

I use Look Keo carbon pedals. Reason being is that I found them easier to clip in andout of as opposed to SPD-sl's
Not meaning to point out the obvious, but all road bike cleats are a pain to walk in because they're designed for pedalling not walking. Mountain bike style SPD cleats are usually enclosed by a kind of tread type arrangement that enables fairly comfy walking. You can buy road shoes that take these cleats or buy an adaption kit but they still stand out proud of the sole making walking difficult.
