Speed limits

I doubt you'd see any increase in overtaking or left hooks. From experience, doing around 30mph in a 30 limit or 40mph in a 40 limit doesn't stop most cars from overtaking & left hooking me. In fact it makes left hooking worse as most motorists don't seem to have the ability to judge the speed of a cyclist.

I think you would, up here at least, most drivers are willing to wait judge your pace before overtaking but the longer they need to wait the more frustrated they become and the more likely they are to do a daft overtake, they are more likely also to feel the time gap is big enough for them to carry out a left hook, etc. Unfortunately you do get the odd idiot who will left hook etc regardless :-(

Are cyclists terrorising slower cars up the M1 then?

Damn, those poor motorists, what ever can we do to save them.

There is no need for a different, lower speed limit for a bicycle than a car.

The braking distance on a half decent road bike is shorter than your average crap heap rolling about on the roads, if small cars with rubbish brakes are allowed to travel the speed limit, then why aren't we?

If they imposed a speed limit, it would just be ignored, what exactly are they going to do?

They can't exactly get you with a speed camera, as lovely as a picture of someones behind wiggling about would be, to identify the person would be impossible.

Forward facing hand held speed traps, unlike a car, a bicycle and person have no straight edges by which a speed can be accurately recorded, the speed guns are not exactly accurate at the best of times and so it would be laughed out of court.

Which ever dictatorship government was in power at the time a law like this would pass, they wouldn't stop there, bicycle MOT's, insurance, the display of a tax disc and number plates. The government would make a killing and us commuters will no longer have our free commuting option.
