A friend of mine needs a replacement headset for the above bike. He has opened up the gubbins and told me that it uses caged bearings and has Cane Creek branded into some components of the headset. Also, there is a serial number VP-A18AK. Does anyone know here I can find a replacement for him? That's all the info I have. Sorry.

TIA

In between here and there
When I replaced my one on a Roubaix I had to buy it from Specialized Dealer, it appeared to to made for Specialized and not available as aftermarket spares. I spent ages searching in the end it was quite easy to just email a Specialized dealer. Pasting your part number in to Google reminded me how painful it was trying to find it...

Haha! Tell me about it. I'm not a complete novice, nor am I a guru, when it comes to all things bike, but searching for a headset for my friend was a nightmare. Thanks for your reply, LOCO.

Just pop into you local specialized dealer, when ever I need to know something about my Specializied Secteur Elite I just pop into the local Specialized Concept store and they are always very helpful.

I suggested that to my friend. That's two of us who have thought the same thing. Will tell him to give the Spesh dealer in Stafford a call tomorrow. Thanks, phil.

For some reason it is not always the first place that springs to mind.

When I needed some new wheels for my Secteur last year I looked everywhere else then remembered them, when I called them whey said yes no problem we have a set of wheels in for £105  so of I popped and got them.

Last week I noticed a couple of spokes were a bit loose so I went in and they said oh yes they need a first service pop them in next week, so i popped them in and they made sure they were true and all the spoke were tight and fitted new rim tape as I wasnt happy with the mess I had made last year of fitting it and didnt charge me a penny

Thanks for that, pete. I thought it was strange that there were caged bearings in the headset. I would have thought the same as you. Maybe it was just cheap shot from the supplier of the bike? I called my friend yesterday and apparently he's taking the bike to a shop as his freehub has now given up the ghost, too.

The headset on my bike is an internal/semi-integrated ZS. I also have caged bearings in my headset and want to swap them out for sealed cartridge bearings. How do I figure out what sealed bearings I need, re your info as above? (If it's possible to find out)

My HS info is:

1 1/8 inch zerostack
semi-integrated/internal

Ritchey Logic Zero Stack Press Fit Integrated Comp, 1-1/8in
Upper Fit (S.H.I.S.): ZS44/28.6
Lower Fit (S.H.I.S.): ZS44/30
Upper HT OD/ID: 50/44
Lower HT OD/ID: 50/44

Just remembered we have had this before so deleted my post.

What your guy needs is a Specialized Mindset.

Getting one is another problem but I think you can replace it with a different system which will work just as well.

Here's the link to a guy who used a Cane Creek standard integrated headset

You just need a semi-integrated headset that runs sealed bearings.

The best bet for headsets is to start with the Cane Creek Headset finder

http://www.canecreek.com/headset-fit-finder

All you need do is put the ID (44) and steerer (presumably 1 1/8th) and you get their suggested solution

The manufacturers do their best to help - the Cane Creek you want is a 40 series headset but you need the 44 model of the 40 series! Why didn't they call the series xyz and the specific model 44mm?:banghead:

Hahaha! I have no idea, bud. The whole episode with my friend's headset led me to take a look at mine. I researched a lot online but still didn't quite get it. It took me half a day to understand that zero stack, semi-integrated and internal headsets are all the same thing. Damn manufacturers

Thank you for your help. I hadn't been on here for a while, up until the last few days. Much friendlier and less arrogance than 'other' bike forums ;)

I have a Secteur Sport, but I assume as it's the same frame it will be the same headset. I replaced the cup and caged bearings arrangement with sealed bearings (after knocking the races out of the fork tube, obviously). My local (ish) dealer was adamant that I needed a complete headset and as the price difference was negligible I stopped arguing and just bought the thing. I used the sealed bearings from the kit, and binned the rest. Unfortunately I don't know now what size the sealed bearings are, without taking the forks out!
