Just noticed the one Steve linked to has a triple and 12-25 cassette, mine came with a 12-30 so plenty of low gears

It is important that it has a triple and that it takes at least 28c tyres with mudguards or at least something to stop the mud and not disc brakes. It is as much for a winter bike as anything. But can be utilised as a tourer.
Thanks for your input Doog. We travel light and usually without front panniers. If we take camping gear I get the Koga World traveller out. I am wondering what the weight difference is between the tricross and the Dawes Galaxy. By the time I have changed the tyres and rack I am into the Dawes Galaxy price range.

Can i ask why you dont want disc brakes?

I'm not a tourist so take what I say lightly. I had a 2009 tricross which I liked except a few things I didn't:
The model I got (can't recall, but copper brown sport) looked real nice and was quite imposing on my commute. I didn't like the brakes and neither did I like the brake shudder from the fork. Also wasn't too fond of the wide range cassette though this might be more suitable for touring. Itmgot stolen so I replaced it with a focus mares cx bike which has narrower range cassette and road brakes (I believe they're called mini v). I also didn't like the stock handlebar on the tricross, it was kinda angular just behind the hoods.
I would have lived with it if it didn't get stolen but I much prefer my focus. Havingnsaid that, I think I'd like disk brakes next...
