I tighten up as far as they go then one click untighten.
I like to feel my feet are really tightly held in the pedals

Maybe it was because my SPD cleats were worn, but with maximum tension on a pedal, I could not unclip - full stop!

I actually had to 'scoot' my bike up the hill I semi-dismounted on because I could not get my foot off the pedal. I must have been a bit thick that day because it did not occur to me to take my foot out of the shoe ...

I eventually caught up with the other riders and had to get @Ajay to twist my foot round by hand!

I once ended up on my back while still clipped in with one foot, easily my most embarrassing clipless moment, and it was surprisingly hard to unclip in that position even on the lowest tension.

I just leave them at the slackest, but I might try winjim's suggestion to see how I get on with it.

Whatever you do, make sure to adjust the tensions on both sides of both pedals. I missed doing one side of some new pedals and only discovered it when I tried to do an emergency dismount on a steep climb on a forum ride, and realised that my foot was stuck!

Crikey!

Yes -have done them equally both sides. The instructions said to, but I can appreciate the danger of forgetting one!
