spd-sl to spd?

i was given very kindly from a member on here a spd-sl set (shoes, pedals, cleats) but now that the cleats ave worn out i am thinking of changing to spd but not wanting to spend a fortune and get new shoes to replace my current ones that i like i have seen this

You can't go wrong with SPD's Ed.
The cleats will last far longer then your shoes. Those pedals you linked to are very good.

Rather then those adapters, get a new pair of shoes. The SPD cleat would be lethal for walking in without a recessed soled shoe.

can you recommend a budget spd shoe? preferably i want a properly rigid sole like the spd-sl shoes

I have those pedals and they are great! I agree with @ianrauk, get some new shoes my OH has road shoes that can also take SPD cleats and they are death traps! He hardly wears them now he just wears his SPD shoes that he was given.

Good recessed shoes are just as rigid as road shoes. With the type of riding you do Ed you wouldn't notice much difference anyway.

Check out the DMR range on Wiggle. Nothing flash, but solid and workmanlike, and theres a sale on too. Picked up a set of road SPD shoes for £29 last week (including my discount).

Because SPDSL shoes have no tread on the sole, you either walk on the cleat or gingerly on the heel. The cleat barely touches the ground on a pair of spd cleated road shoes I put together for winter duty.

Needless to say, the shoes will be replaced for something more suitable

SPD-sl cleats have a wider area and the coloured bits are designed to be walked on. SPD cleats are small metal with no grip designed into them at all. I had M520's dhb road shoes and they were like lethal on hard surfaces.
My SPD shoes I got from Lidl about 4 years ago. They're not the best but still going good. I'd not risk walking even short distances in road shoes and SPD cleats.

Am I the only one who gets confused between SPDS-SL and SPD?

And why on earth are clip-in pedals called clipless? Is this the French and their contrarian nature again?

Originates from "toe-clips" the rather silly and often flimsy method of just about keeping your feet on the nasty flat pedals they come on.

Take the toe-clip off, and you have cleated "clipless" systems or a flat pedal
