I don't want to court controversy, but if touring shoes amongst others, are generally SPD, then surely 'road shoes' is a misnomer?

Not at all. Touring shoes have recessed SPD cleats so cater for those who might want to walk as part of their cycling activities. SPD-SL shoes are aimed at the more competitive end of the market, where the goal is max power transfer, and thankfully involves very little walking. Those road shoes that can use either SPD or SPD-SL cleats cover the middle ground ;)
