I've just changed to clipless with the same pedals as the OP, i.e. Shimano A530. i've started off with the tensions set to minimum to facilitate unclipping in an emergency. I haven't had said emergency yet, but the planned engaging and disengaging is going well so far. Even though I'm on minimum retainer tension, I don't get any impression of the cleats feeling unseated or otherwise inadeqately held. i quite like the feel of being connected to the bike, and knowing that my feet aren't going to slip in the wet either.

That was my thinking, plus my thinking was having the flat side helps when pulling away in traffic, you don't have to faff about clipping in and potentially leaving yourself vunerable.

It's easy enough to pull away using one clipped in foot and the unclipped resting on the pedal. Once you build up a little speed and cars are away .... clip the other foot in.
Takes practice and eventually you can do it without looking down :smile:
