I have fond memories of Friday afternoons...

Bunking off School, bus to Cambridge, spend the afternoon admiring young ladies in Summer Dresses a few pints in teh Red Cow or the Spread Eagle, going to the Corn Exchange to see the likes of Curved Air, Ginger Baker, Thin Lizzy.... and then the last bus home
"Showing your age"

Would like to ride oxford to southampton on saturday, wightdragon can you share your route??
couple of options here for you, depending on which side of Southampton you want to end up

PpPete, thanks thats really helpful. As a complete novice at UK cycling (i became a cyclist, of sorts, while living in Asia, so am used to dodging motorbikes dogs and chickens but less used to uk navigation...) is there an easy way to find out which roads have cycle paths along them ? OS maps dont seem to show it - eg the A40 and A44 out of Oxford have cycle paths that arent on the map... Sustrans routes seem to include tracks and trails which isnt too good for my skinny tyres/road bike fetish.

Wouldnt it be good if someone classified all british roads with a cycle-friendly grade, based on how busy or quiet they are, whether there is a cycle lane, safety stats perhaps, then it would be easy to pick out routes without getting stuck on b roads that looked good on the map but are terrifying commuter runs to the non-local... Maybe this exists already?? We could get Wiggo to sponsor it and call them wiggins roads ha ha....

That's an impressive cycle OP! Would love to do a route like that. The most miles I've done in one go is 84 and that was from where I live near Eastleigh, through the New Forest to Christchurch and back. Anyway, I'm in your area and always looking to meet and partner up with people. PM me if interested and keep up the good work!

Best I've come across is www.bikehike.co.uk Go to the course creator page. By default that gives you a large left hand panel of Googlemaps and a smaller OS map panel on the right. There are clickboxes at the top of the lefthand panel, so you can swop it to "Satellite" or tho "OSMcycle"
The latter is a version of OpenStreetMaps with all the national and regional cyclepaths highlighted. There are plenty of places with differnt renders of OSM but the advantage of bikehike is you can always check with reference to the OS panel whether a particular "cycle-route" is road or farm-track

Unfortunately that could be the start of a very slippery slope.... we get knocked off on a road that isn't classed as "cycle friendly" and suddenly we find we are guilty of "contributory negligence" for choosing that road, even though the accident was caused entirely by a motorist.
