My good headphones certainly show up the cheap ones! The drop-off at 3 kHz was actually due to the cheap headphones.

I now find that I actually can hear some frequencies up to about 13 kHz with my right ear but my left drops away at 10 kHz and there are startling peaks and troughs on the way up there.

There is another page on that website which gives you more control of the tone generator - HERE.

PS Ha ha ha - I just heard a knock at the door which sounded just like a mate from round the corner. Rather than take the headphones off, I unplugged them and opened the door, still wearing them. As I did so, I shouted "WHAT - CAN'T YOU SEE I'M BUSY!!!" only to find the gasman standing there rather my mate. Oops!

I lose it at 10kHz but can hear it throughout the range.

On the fancy version that Colin mentioned, I am completely deaf. I phoned the doctor but could hear him, so I rechecked the page and it said it doesn't work with Internet Explorer.
The wife is a townie and I guess she must have done a lot more clubbing that she lets on, LOL, she also suffers a little from tinitus and we think that may be masking the higher frequencies for her
Think I'm heading same way as your wife with the tinitus. May be a co-incidence but its something I've only started noticing over the last couple of years, which happens to be when I started having regular long-haul flights, and this is after 20+ years in a work environment constantly wearing ear protection.

I was trying out one of those Mosquito apps on my phone once... turned it on, and I couldn't hear a thing... then my youngest came down from the attic bedroom, saying "what's that horrible noise?", and the dog was looking decidedly uncomfortable too.
