Sorry - but another 'click' victim requiring help!

Marin hybrid. Awful click on left pedal down stroke  . Thought it might be pedals so changed them. Nope, not pedals. The noise has got worse and starts to sound like someone going mad with a stapler. If I pedal by only pulling up on the right foot it is silent. As soon as any pressure is applied on the left foot, going uphill, downhill and on the flat, the click gets going again.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've looked at other threads and 'noise advice' pages, but can't see anything quite like this. Hope someone can help otherwise my right leg is going to end up HUGE:biggrin:. It's such an awful noise that I pedal by pulling only with the right leg every time I come across another cyclist or pedestrian

ps - I should say I do intend getting the OH to have a look at it, but after investigating possible causes online, I can see why he is dragging his heels!

Could it be broken pedal bearings?

Two things to bear in mind. As pointed out on the recent thread started by myself, the sound may seem like it's coming from one place but may be coming from somewhere completely different.

If however, it is the left side, it narrows things down considerably as there is less machinery on that side. What kind of bottom bracket do you have? Also could be a saddle/seatpost issue that occurs when you pedal with your left foot. Does it click when you're standing?

Sorry, not at all technically minded, so no idea what kind of bottom bracket it is.
I realised earlier looking at other threads that I haven't checked with standing and pedalling (doesn't click when freewheeling) so I shall try that out when I get home.
As for broken pedal bearings - again, no idea but I shall ask OH to have a look for me.

If you've tried a different set of pedals, it's unlikely to be those.

For bottom bracket, it you have what appear to be identical silver or goldish rings on both sides (drive and non-drive) with small grooves all the way round on them, then it's an external cups bottom bracket (hollowtech II etc). There's not a great deal can go wrong with these but when it does, there's not a lot you can do apart from change it. You've not said how long you've had the bike or how many miles, a bottom bracket should be good for a few thousand miles.

Had it 6-7 years but not done more than 400 miles I reckon. The bulk of those have been done in the last few months ^_^

Clicks on my bike turned out to be the bearings in the front wheel. Took it apart, re-greased everything, and it seems to have cured it. Done the rear wheel too for good measure. If you are unsure what to do, the You Tube it. There are some great videos on there with perfect step-by-step guides. I've learn't a whole lot of servicing techniques for the bike from You Tube.

I am getting a fine list of items to check together for my OH

I would say that is a bottom bracket, I had to put up with a hideous noise which sounds like metal 'popping' so i got a new sealed bottom bracket, which cured it, only other thing i could recommend is making sure there is no grit inside which is making it make the noise

Clicks can be caused by a number of things
1: Bottom bracket - it's either worn or contaminated. It's much easier to fit a new one than fix the existing one.
2: Pedal bearings - sometimes this can creak and click under pressure, if it's possible, clean and grease the bearings.
3: Cleats on the bottom of your shoes can be loose and make strange noises.
4: Bottle cages - surprisingly these can creak, grease the fixing bolts and re-fit.

Barnet,
Sometimes clicks come from the strangest places. It could be the BB, take it out, clean the threads, grease and re-tighten. at the same time put a thin film of grease on the cranks as you put them back on. On my wife's bike it was the rear wheel bearings, Cleaned, greased and adjusted problem solved.
