One thing I found was when I was tired, or when cycling in too low a cadence, too high effort, I lacked the skill and energy to take more weight on my pedals over potholes etc so all the vibration was transmitted to my bum. As I got stronger and got to know the roads I was able to anticipate better.

Here's a q - how do you know what the optimum saddle position should be for YOU. I've been using a charge spoon for a couple of weeks and though I'm sure I'm still bedding it in, I'm getting uncomfy after 10 miles or so. How do I know which height is best / how forward / aft it should be?

A Charge Spoon won't bed in; it's plastic.

There's so much on the web about ideal sitting position. Just Googling ought to bring up lots.

Whilst agreeing with the criticism of gel seats, I'm a bit wary of advice encouraging use of padding without first asking a few questions about journey length bike fit, etc.,better surely to get used to cycling in ordinary clothes.
If you get used to cycling with padding, it could mean you will believe you can't cycle without, and this would limit your future cycling.
For example I am cycling to a party this weekend, it would be quite impractical to wear padded clothing all evening and equally impractical to change at the event. Had I become dependent on padding, it would have meant having to drive there which would have put a restriction on the fun, so persevere without the special clothing and get full use of your bike, I say!
Don't get me going on shorts, that's a rant for another day.

I find that 20-25 miles is about as far as I'm comfortable cycling without padded shorts/undershorts, though on hot days that goes down to about 5 miles maximum.

Uh oh, I've been using a gel seat cover I got in TK Max (not sure if they also sell padded shorts), time for some chaffing then I guess. Either that or I'll cycle everywhere standing up. More likely I'll do one, then the other.
