I find Sora a little bit clunkier than Tiagra or 105 but never had a problem with them. Seem pretty bulletproof and on my most used bikes.

My wifes bike came with Sora shifters, the one complaint she had against them is that they were always losing their indexing adjustment. We moved her over to 105 shifters & problem solved.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
A drop-bar brifter that can't shift up from the drops is absurd

As others have said if your not racing how much time are you going to lose?
How much time is spent on the drops for "normal" cycling?

As for indexing i have not had to adjust my bike in over 9 months and it is still sweet.

I've got 2200 shifters (old Sora 8-speeds) on my tourer and I don't find the button being much of a problem. I can actually flick the button on the right while on the drops.

If you don't want Sora thern Halfords have got a sale on their Boardman range at the moment, and the Boardman Road Comp is now £600 with Tiagra [link], or Evans have the Trek 2.0 which is also Tiagra for £600 [link]

I don't think much time is lost, however it forces me to vary my gear changing strategy. I manically change gears all the time, mainly because of my dodgy knees - obviously others may ride differently.

Thanks all for your thoughts. Have certainly put sora back on the menu for me.
Definitely going for drops now, may spend a bit more for tiagra if I test ride a sora and dont like it. After all the test is the ultimate decider!
Really fancied the boardman but want a triple chainring, and I had seen that Trek on the Evans site, looks really nice but i'm a bloody long way from a branch. However that bike is on another site (whose name now escapes me!) Which has a branch 2 hours away........ And 0% finance :$

Better not ;-)

sora often makes expensive frames wheels etc affordable , and its only the upgraded groupsets that make such a machine a true racer ,

for day to day its a very acceptable groupset imo , take defy range mega frames and build but sora why ? id say say so riders can experience riding a giant bike without the extra cost of a groupset that isnt going to make any noticable difference to their times getting to work or while out on a weekend run but the option to upgrade is there anytime .

looks like your on the right track choices wise , if theres an affordable tiagra go for it im sure most places deliver these days .

Oh yes, delivery is available, but really wanted to test ride a few first. And to go to a bike shop and then order a slightly different bike from the web is just not cricket!

Dont fancy buying blind either! Oh the dilemma! :-D
