Hi Guys,

I currently own a 2014 Giant defy 3 with standard stock wheels (giant s-elite c) and a 9 speed Shimano Sora groupset and want to change to a Shimano 105 5800, 11 speed groupset.

The question is, will the 11 speed cartridge fit onto my current hubs on the giant s-elite c wheelset or will i need to buy new wheels as well?

Everything else looks pretty compatible, so its just the cassette issue that's nagging me....any help would be most appreciated

I did the same on my 2013 Defy and the freehub was not compatible. However, I had a set of 11 speed wheels already, so no additional cost.

You will probably be okay with the wheels and freehub you have. You won't be able to use Sora Brifters and mechs with 11 speed, and the chain rings will need to be 11 speed spaced as well. If you're going for the full 5800 groupset, that will have everything you need, if the 11 speed cassette won't fit the existing freehub, that's easily sorted.

You'll need some new wheels.
The old ones will only go up to a 10 speed cassette.
Wheels are the best upgrade you can go for imo so push the boat out as far as it will go (within reason!)

That is true on only needing a new freehub, but they are stock wheels and the new freehub will be a similar cost to the same spec wheel

Thanks guys, i had a feeling it wasn't going to be straight forward as i had thought......so a new free hub is what i require.

You won't need new wheels, just a new freehub. However, you have an excuse to upgrade your wheels, so why not.

Will depend on the hub though, stock wheels are not always that easy to get spares for or upgrade.

I've just done a similar upgrade for the better halfs Liv Avail(Ultegra from Sora) and I've just used a 10-speed cassette as that is all the stock wheels will take;no problem to do though, just have to adjust the limit screws to stop any over-shifting.

So cheapest option is a 10-speed cassette if you don't want the cost now of new wheels.

apparently i can't just replace the freehub as it will cause spacing problems!!! Bugger! Looks like a new back wheel could be in order then......

If it's any help, Wiggle do some Cosine wheels for £60 or so, which I found quite good, 11 speed, with spacer, and quite a wide internal diameter, so I found getting tyres on and off particularly easy. They came out of the box true, and ran really well for the 2000km or so before I had to stop using them when the frame on the bike failed. Once that's fixed I have no doubt they will be put back on again.
