Sorry if this has been asked before, but having read other threads i am no wiser and a little confused
The Crank set on my Specialized Roubaix 2013 Sora 9 speed is looking a little bit worn some of the teeth are now broken, i read somewhere that because they are Sora components i will have to replace the whole lot and i CANNOT replace separate bits.... My question is , IS this true and also can i just replace the crank set with an Ultegra 6700 50/34 crank set..thanks in advance ^_^

Of course it's not true.
You can buy separate components, including replacement outer or inner chainrings.

Who told you that? Halfords I expect...

I went in there for some jockey wheels once and he tried to sell me a whole new rear derailleur since he seemed to think you couldn't buy them seperately. I informed him I'd bought jockey wheels many times before, but it was ok. I'd walk two doors up the road to Evans and buy them in there instead, since I'd only come in to Halfords because I'd used their car park.

Your 2013 Sora Chainset came with "broken" and "worn" teeth - they are designed that way to aid shifting. The chainrings should last 3 - 5 years.

You can upgrade to Ultegra - I presume you have a Hollowtech II chainset rather than square tape - so just get the same. It will be a lot lighter and a bit smoother (ie you won't notice that much difference).

Brand new FC-3550, complete with "broken" as well as shark teeth - it shouldn't be too difficult to compare the profile with what you have (assuming you have the compact).

The man from Specialized concept store told me that i could not upgrade the front or rear derailleur, the crankset or the front or rear mesh BECAUSE none of these were compatible with the Sora Shifters ??

Could i therefore replace the rear cassette with a Shimano/Sram 10 speed even though my current set up is 9 speed , with a bit of tweaking etc.

You have to ask yourself.. why?
If it's 9 speed then stick to a 9 speed cassette.

I have just half upgraded my bike. I still have the sora crankset but have Tiagra shifters and derailleur and have noticed no problems.
The chap in the shop is pulling your leg or trying to empty your wallet. One or the other.

I will get around to a Tiagra crankset, just not this week.

Are the Tiagra shifters very much different to the Sora ones ??

I have a 2011 model Defy and the Sora shifters had those funny little mouse ear things that you shifted with your thumb. The Tiagra shifters have the little lever just inside the big lever. Much easier shifting from the drops. Far better, I find.

Is that possible?

I'd have thought you have either upgraded it or you haven't.

You could definitely upgrade half the bike though; although working out what constitutes half a bike might be tricky.
