Sorry to bang on, but if that is the case will an Ultegra rear mech fit a Sora 3500 set up, also with a 9 speed cassette that is AND can i fit an ultegra front chainset (compact)...Cheers in advance..

When working out dérailleur and shifter compatibility, there is one important property: the pull ratio. That is, how far sideways will the mech move for a given amount of pull on the cable.

Apart from a few odd bits of Dura Ace, Shimano pull ratio has been the same ever since 7 speed. That means virtually anything is compatible with anything (although if you try using a 7 speed mech on your latest 10 speed Ultegra, the shifting may suffer due to quality issues with the mech). Between 8, 9 and 10 speed, the sprockets on the cassette have indeed got closer together, but that's been achieved by making the shifters pull less cable, not by adjusting the pull ratio of the mechs.

Campag is a different story - they seem to change the ratio of everything every couple of years. However, most Shimano has been compatible with most other Shimano since back close to the dawn of indexing.

The spacing of the sprockets on 8, 9 & 10 speed cassettes is different ( the spacers in between each sprocket is a different size on different speed cassettes ) doesn't the distance movement of each click of the shifter take this account ?

I thought we were talking about having matched (Spd) shifters and cassette, no? As long as those two components are designed for the same speed, job's a goodun'. Rear mech doesn't matter...

I've got this setup:-
9 speed tiagra cassette 10 speed 105 rear mech, 9 speed Sora levers 10 speed tiagra chain - all works fine if its any help.

Yes it does, for reasons already stated in the thread.

When I built my Bob Jackson I had a 10 speed ultegra drivetrain with 9 speed shifters and a 9 speed cassette - worked fine. Eventually changed it to 10 by changing the shifters and cassette - the 9 speed shifters being used to replace those on my commuter that suffered after a crash. So to answer your question, yes!
