OP, recommendation is to really find a light that has the right balance of features you want. Beam pattern was important on my list as I need peripheral vision on single track and not blind on-coming people/cars. I also like an all in one unit with out a separate battery to mount as I swap often between bike and less things to carry around when I lock it up when I'm about. I have a light & motion Taz 1200 which fits the bill, but it's not perfect with an average/low run time. I'm not advocating to get the Taz, as the cateye bobones suggested has the same output and is cheaper, but the beam pattern isn't as wide. A friend use magicshine 880, which is very bright, but as it's designed as a trail light it can blind other road users.

MagicShine MJ-816 for me. Variable output intensity and beam choice, battery charge indicator and on a low setting will keep on going for at least 12 hours. On max it can flash-cook a badger from 100 yards. I'd buy another one of these in a heartbeat.

What lights are good for seeing where I am going at night in dark unlit country lanes? I want to be able to avoid the potholes etc. Max bang for buck would be good obviously.

Thanks.

For the price, I can't argue with these.

What sells it for me is the zoom, I can very easily even with thick gloves move from wide to spot. This is essential for me as on my commute is unlit, and popular with other cyclists so I like not to blind them if I can!

They are good lights - I got one of the Aldi torches which are just like that.
They do chomp through AAAs, so rechargeable is the way to go.

I did a night ride with them and on high, got 60-90 mins out of a set. For my commute which is roughly 3 hrs use a week they are fine all week as I swap between modes. Definately use rechargeable though!

I have a dealextreme set up, torch, mount, 2x 18650(?) rechargeables & charger. Cost me £26, 4 years ago and has been used consistently since. Its still going nicely albeit the batteries are beginning to discharge a bit more quickly, 2+ hours on full beam rather than 3+. Its been my to see by light on completely unlit rural roads & through countryside parks in the dead of winter from 5am to 10pm.

my only gripe was the 6 week shipping time

me and my big mouth. The light gave up the other day, I think the switch has gone. I've replaced it with an LED Lenser P7 which seems pretty good albeit only after a short test ride tonight.
