Is the a package out there that produces a graphical profile (height elevations) of a route? Something like they do for the tour, that maybe plugged into google maps.
There's plenty of free (web based) software that does similat although not as precise. I'm in the habit of using www.bikely.com but there are others, www.bikehike.co,uk for instance. A good package if you are willing to pay for it (free trial) is motionbased.
I use Tracklogs here http://www.tracklogs.co.uk/cgi-bin/publ/user.cgi. Produces a profile of a route plus other statistics (total height gain, length etc). Any of the other digital map packages will do the same.
I use SportTracks - www.zonefivesoftware.com/SportTracks/ which is free (donations appreciated though) and is very comprehensive. You can import GPS logs in various formats which will then show that route overlaid on maps from Google etc. It will show you elevation with speed profiles etc. etc.
Keep in mind that each of these sites/software calculates ascent/descent totals using their own formulas, and there can be some quite big differences as a result. That said, it doesn't alter the profile generated.
For example; my ride yesterday showed a total ascent of 2270m on MotionBased and 1184m on MapMyRide!
The annoying thing I find about bikeroutetoaster when using it to plot courses for my Garmin is that it's hard to add stuff onto rides after you've finished plotting them (like adding an extra coursepoint for your lunch stop, for example, or an extra loop at the start). Still it's a very useful tool!
After you have downloaded the route onto the Garmin from "Toaster", download it into Garmin Training Center and then you can edit it to add extra course points for such as breaks and then reupload it again. As for an extra loop, thats a different matter. Not used "Toaster" for a while but do you not get the option to save the course for later use whereby you could then add a loop and then upload that ammended course?
