I heard today from someone that their insurance company has now added Plus Commuting as an option you must add to your insurance declaration if you drive to work. Is this something all insurance companies are trying to sneak in so we get caught making a claim when driving to or from work or just a few sneaky companies. Or is it now standard practice. I must get my policy out and check it.

Indeed, usually with the words "to your normal place of work" or similar in the small print.

It's actually a helpful one, IMO, as it's a reminder that anyone who claims mileage needs to ensure that their car is insured for business use.

Yup, they've been doing it for years.
Everytime i renew, whichever company i get a quote with asks that question.
I suppose they've worked out that, not unnaturally, most accidents occur during rush hour when everyones 'commuting'. No doubt they realised they can extract a bit more money by making you declare it.
Sad thing is i commute by car ONE day a week, but feel obliged to declare it cos sods law says thats the day i'll one day make a claim.

Im sure mine says 'to a single place of work'

As I am sometimes required to work at different locations which can involve travelling in work time, I have to include class one business use.

Its a sod if you normally cycle. Just because of the handful of days a year when you look outside the window and the rain is coming down in torrents, or you think about what you will have to take home at the end of the day (laptop, safety boots, overalls, HiVi, notebook, mug, coffee, etc) and realise that you can't fit that into your rucksack, just because of those few days you need commuting insurance.

Oh well!!

Before getting too flustered about it, see if it does actually affect the price of the insurance. It cost nothing for me to add commuting duties and only a tenner or so to add driving for work.

That's the usual case, they specify a single place of work and excludes any driving while you are at work. It also excludes cover if you have more then one place of work even if you still only commute so there is no working at head office on Monday and the local office the rest of the week and also no having two separate jobs.
I have mine insured for full business use.

I get a fairly substantial car allowance, to get this i must have a vehicle that is insured as class 1 busines use. its worth it even though i use the bike more. the cost difference between SDP + commuting (which looking through last 7 years policy docs has always been on the docs) is about £50 a year. thats barely £1 a week.

A previous employer expected us to use our own vehicles to get around with, and would grumble about paying fuel bills (and would certainly not pay milage)
After one of us had a minor knock during the day and the insurance company asked all sorts of aquard questions, and eventually did not pay out.
We all stopped using our cars and reverted back to public transport
end result is costs of staff transport went up by many hundreds of percent and time taken to get from one job to the next went up by about 400%.
Stingy boss would never fork out for a company vehicle.
And I heard last week from someone still there he is up to his old tricks again, so I told him about the insurance side.
That will stop him again for a few years

Direct line put that on as standard for us, no extra cost.

companies have been doing it for years, it's just different options for different people - my gran hasn't needed commuting on her insurance for many years.
