hehe ... my kind of cycling, too!

If you lot are not careful, you'll start going on family cycle touring weekends next, and then whole cycling holidays
Have a look at the "touring & expedition" section, you might just find something of interest there ...

Some excellent examples:
long weekend stories with photos from the UK in April
Way of the Roses
family tour

Happy reading :-)

Keep Calm and OMG.......CAKES!!
I have a friend who is only interested in cycling just a few miles so whenever we go out on our bikes together we have plenty of cafe/pub stops.

One day last year it took us 8 hours to cycle 30 miles!! we stopped for coffee in a Tesco's......coffee and lunch at another friends house and on the way back we stopped at a pub and listened to a folk band for the afternoon. TBH it was a thoroughly enjoyable day

I think there is a certain irony that most sportives are operated across some of our better countryside with beautiful views, yet the vast majority of riders barely notice any of it for want of completing the route as quickly as possible!

(I count myself in that club)

Even with my new road bike itching to be ridden, I still love taking my 10 year old for a pootle down the trail.

No doubt she will be asking to go once I finish her new bike!

So, the GF suddenly decides today is a nice day and she wants to go for a bike ride, but on her terms, i.e a slow pace and lots of stops. Whilst pretending to complain it was actually alright with me as I'm doing a sportive tomorrow so at least will have something left in the legs.

Anyway off we go at a steady pace, about 10-12mph (I guess, the cycle computer was banned) chatting away, after about 10 miles we stopped at a lovely cafe for Coffee, another 15 miles and a stop at a country pub for a very nice lunch, on for another 15 miles and a second cafe stop before home.

Okay, so I might not have burnt as many calories as normal or increased my fitness at all but, it was one of the nicest days I have had on a bike, I've been a bit obsessed with going further and faster since getting more serious earlier this year and to suddenly sit up, enjoy the wonderful countryside, the lovely weather and the just about acceptable company  was an absolute pleasure.

If you haven't tried it for a while I would highly recommend it

Tempted.

When is she next free?

How I'd love a gentle pootle into the countryside but I cannot help but thrash it and then wonder why I am always knackered and red-faced when I get to work each morning.

Must learn to leave a little earlier and take it easier in the extra 5 or so minutes I have given myself. I need help

We just finished the Coast and Castles ride, and it was amazing how much people missed just because they were pedalling so fast. At Warkworth, only 2 out of 8 riders saw the group of 5 Herons. At Belsay, only 1 person saw the badger, and at Berwick 4 people missed the fox and her cubs....makes you wonder why people cycle. For me its not about going quickly or slowly, but about just taking the time to see what's there and enjoying yourself. On the way from Innerleithan to the Moorfoot hills I counted 5 curlews!

The only times I can manage a sociable ride is with my other half... because if I don't go at her pace there'll be hell to pay when she gets home. Besides that I just get bored & end up excusing my self and riding off down the road at my pace.

As for not seeing things, I think people simply aren't used to actually absorbing the information their eyes & ears can gather & end up ignoring way to much. I say this as, oddly, I tend to see more interesting things than most people who are just pootling along, despite traveling consistently at or above 20mph.

The majority of my cycling is done with my children, so at a nice lesiurely pace, spotting the sights, playing games & chatting, we usally stick to cycle paths & quite routes, if it's just me & #3 then the pace increases slightly, but not quite as relaxed, we're on more roads, still chatting but i'm giving him instrucations as we go, so have to be much more aware.
I enjoy cycling on my own, I can go at a much faster pace, I love Sportives - Ok i'm slow by the majoroty of other riders standards, but it's my chance to just let go & loose myself for a few hours, nothing to think of other then the road in front & the next milestone, marker on the route.
I have revisted 2 of my sportive rides with my bubbas staying at YH for a couple nights, as the scenery was glorious & wanted to go bcak and enjoy it properly and share something with them.

I do the occasional family ride, which is nice for all sorts of reasons. I also go out with friends on occasion on our road bikes, but kind of prefer solo riding, when I don't feel the pressure to make conversation, can stop and take photos when I feel like it, and generally appreciate my surroundings more than some of my friends seem to. I too find myself noticing things that other simply haven't seen.
