So, the GF suddenly decides today is a nice day and she wants to go for a bike ride, but on her terms, i.e a slow pace and lots of stops. Whilst pretending to complain it was actually alright with me as I'm doing a sportive tomorrow so at least will have something left in the legs.

Anyway off we go at a steady pace, about 10-12mph (I guess, the cycle computer was banned) chatting away, after about 10 miles we stopped at a lovely cafe for Coffee, another 15 miles and a stop at a country pub for a very nice lunch, on for another 15 miles and a second cafe stop before home.

Okay, so I might not have burnt as many calories as normal or increased my fitness at all but, it was one of the nicest days I have had on a bike, I've been a bit obsessed with going further and faster since getting more serious earlier this year and to suddenly sit up, enjoy the wonderful countryside, the lovely weather and the just about acceptable company :whistle: was an absolute pleasure.

If you haven't tried it for a while I would highly recommend it :biggrin:

was thinking of posting the same. been out with my daughter today, 12 miles in hour and 20mins or something like that, we stopped for around 10 minutes half way round. she did well for 11 years of age on an old bso mountain bikey thingy, may have gone further but for a puncture

we avaeraged around 9mph, i manged to chat as we cycled, look round and see things i wouldnt normally see, i was exhausted or obsessed with my computer, was able to just enjoy cycling. im never gonna be a good sporting cyclist so keep reminding myself that this is why i do it. bit of excersise, fun fresh air and to be sociable

I went out with my 10 year old son and a mate of mine. We cycled 32 miles at an average of 11 mph stopped after 18 miles for coffee & cake. My son said to me that he really enjoyed it and that makes it even more special to me, spending time with my son doing something we both enjoy. He even asked if we can go out for an evening ride later.

We did this last night.
Scotland had a rare bit of nice weather so me, wife and 9 year old daughter went out on the bikes.
My wife only very recently learnt how to cycle and is still a little wobbly.
Me and the 9 year old were at the bottom end of our pace so we could all stay together, but stay together we did.

Very sociable indeed, and as I said to SWMBO at the time, she cycled more last night than the rest of the whole of here life put together.

It's meant to be fun first and foremost and that's what it was for us.

Recovery rides are the most important part of training, so don't feel guilty about having a few more of these pleasure rides now and again :biggrin:

I must admit I get a bit guilty of cycle computer watching instead of enjoying the ride. I'm just getting my wife a tricycle as she has balance problems and my daughter a tag along bike for the same reason so looking forward to some family rides. I think when I'm riding in general maybe I'll turn the cycle computer upside down so I know my average but don't bother otherwise till the end of journey

I bought the wife a bike about 2 months ago so we have been doing such rides, with my 2 year old daughter on the back.

We live just off the trans pennine way (Altrincham end) which is a superb trail.

Probably average 10mph over about 1.5 hours.

I think it's probably the best way I find to relax.

It never ceases to amaze me that most 'cyclists' seem to sprint absolutely everywhere - commuting to work - going to the shops - wherever has to be done at max exertion. It really doesn't have to be that way. I mean .. does everyone on foot run to work, to the shops, etc,? No. Most people walk. Cycling should be like that. You know it makes sense.

Must have been something about today, it was windy here, so my son and I decided to take out MTB's down the Wivenhoe trail, nice little potter along 14 miles in an hour and a half including stops, very nice.

Since I got back into bikes, I find I am obsessed with going as fast as possible, trying to beat yesterdays time, does it really matter ? no of course not, I'm not training for a race, so backing off, enjoying the scenery, will do me nearly as much good.

...............having said that, I'm itching to get out early tomorrow morning for a thrash!:thumbsup:

Me too, but I guess today has shown that there is more than one way to enjoy yourself cycling. (does that sound rude!)

Looking forward to discovering some more country pubs to cycle too.

Always enjoy the slower rides with the boss and daughter sometimes tootles along. Get to see so many things that are easily missed when going like the clappers.

We also got out today, after DS2 finished bike training we all got on the bikes and went out for 7 miles, was a great time and all enjoyed, a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, same again tomorrow :biggrin:
