a short-tempered ill-controlled small-minded troll
talking of corrosion... my steel frame (shiny chrome, not painted) has a few spots of corrosion which don't seem to rub off like the other spots have done... mainly on each side of the BB where the downtube and seat tube are welded. i'm reluctant to use anything harsher than a rag because i don't want to remove the (possibly imaginary) protective coating.

any ideas?

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Spray some WD40 on to a rag and wipe the bike down with it. It's good at working through dirt and leaves things shiny and provides some corrosion protection.
Most of the muck is oil-based, so using an oil-based solvent is actually very logical.

I've found that an awful lot of crud can be removed with a dry cloth; the rest gets a wipe with a GT85-sprayed cloth.

That doesn't mean I like doing it...
