I do have muc off and I do have citrus degreaser (which is good on the drive parts) but I can't help feel that to give my bike a good old once over nothing beats warm soapy water and a thick sponge...I can never find any bike shampoo but always have to revert to car shampoo...I presume this will do no damage to the bike frame...am I correct in my assumption??

The commuter gets a steam clean every now and then, a blow dry with the air line and a good load of lubrication, the rest get a good wipe down by hand.

You are indeed correct.
Nothing beats soapy water, a spong and elbow grease for a really dirty bike, ragged dry then polished with Mr Sheen.
There is absolutely no need to pay money for specialist cleaning products.

If the bike is not so filthy then baby wipes are great, followed by the Mr Sheen.

Spray some WD40 on to a rag and wipe the bike down with it. It's good at working through dirt and leaves things shiny and provides some corrosion protection.
