Dumb AI hits another wall, this one being a lorry.
Humans on auto pilot are bad enough already, do we need more?

Actually, the shuttle stopped appropriately but the (human driven) lorry continued and hit it from the side. This is not really news, apart from the fact that another dumb human has caused an accident.

I get the impression that, outaide of production factories, these robots are overhyped as being actual AI.

They’re described as autonomous, not intelligent. Not the same thing at all.

One thing does strike me about this story - in that situation, I probably wouldn’t have reversed, I would most likely have used my horn. Are autonomous vehicles not equipped with horns? It shouldn’t be too much of a technological feat to equip them to warn other drivers if they’re getting too close.

Anyway, if the lorry driver was reversing without good rear visibility, it’s absolutely 100% his fault.

As new autonomous vehicles are on public roads they'll amass more and more data to make them safer. Each collision and near collision will be fed back to fine tune. I expect the ability for such vehicles to navigate safely around will increase.
