Elites are good guitars, because they are decent instruments, and priced fairly well. Gibsons really are overpriced nowadays, considering their lack of attention to QC since around 2001. Messed up paint, dodgy frets etc, is not something you should find on a £1000+ guitar.

My Gibson wouldn't stay in tune. My Teiscos (the most expensive of which was just over £100) are rock solid.xx(

Run with the single coils for a while...theres nought wrong with them. You can get some cool tones from them. Single coils tend to be noisy compared to humbuckers...erm...hence the name. Much can be done to loose the hum via proper cavity shielding.

Humbuckers are thicker in sound...I fit Di Marzio HS3's to my strats also Kinman AVNs...both are 'stacked' humbuckers which can be fitted into the existing single coil scratch plate holes (no need to cut or re channel the body wood). They are going to cost more than your guitar though if you get 3!

Strong pick ups are used to drive the amp harder and get a better tone....now since your son will be rocking out in a POD there is no amp to drive...so spending a fortune of top pups will basically just stop the hum a bit.

This is what i would do:

He has a cool beginner set up and wil get a lot of fun out of it. he should stick with it a while, really squeeze the max out of what he has. The upgrade slope is an expensive one....stick 3 expensive pups on this guitar now, he wont really understand the benfit, it wont improove his playing and desire to learn...

Give it a while...then get him a tube amp combo when he joins a band (then is the time to upgrade the pups). By then he may want a better guitar as well as in a band he'll need two as a minimum...so spend th ecash of a top end guitar and keep the squier as a back up for when the strings break etc.

Remember this...thousands of top albums have been recorded with single coil pups.
