Oh, I'm sorry Jim didn't finish. He was very friendly and full of good advice.
I really, really can't see myself going in for anything longer than a 300 - the thought of riding while sleep-deprived does not appeal...

Hi Fimm, yes it was good to meet you and ride with you a little while and i'm also delighted that you completed the ride-chapeau. after i'd completed my 1st 300k i vowed never ever was i going to do anything longer, but there's a little voice that nags away, you know it's like when someone tells you not to look in the box or press that button, you know you just have to do it. Oh, and you never get sleep deprived that's what Pro Plus is for. Once again well done on your 1st 300k and a bastard hard one at that, i'll see you on the next one.

I got you to the stage that you believed you could do it.

There, in a nutshell, is the essence of audax ! :bravo:

One of the impressive things about the day for me was just how efficient some of the regular audax / endurance guys are. If I come to a small climb / hillock I often don't change gear but give it some beans and sprint up it. A lot of people on club rides/ sportives will do the same. A lot of the guys on Saturday didn't. They didn't accelerate quickly, freewheeled when they got a chance, and did a lot of low gear spinning up hills. In other words they were real experts at conserving energy while still maintaining decent progress.

You're absolutely right, there are some guys who can ride for miles without seeming to slow down at all; they're not the quickest** but can go on for a l-o-o-o-ng way.
If, like George Berwick (stoker on the tandem), you've ridden over 750,000 miles in your life :bicycle: , you get quite good at conserving your energy ! George has also ridden the 24-hr TT every year for the last 50 or so . He is a real legend (and not just for his sartorial style ) in Audax Ecosse.

There was an interview with him on BBC Radio Scotland back in March but I doubt it is available now. This thread tells something of him ...

**still leave me for dead, though
