Cush, They'd have the brooms and shovels sold off within hours of being given them or be off moonlighting like the bloke with the JCB- doing anything but what he's supposed to!
Yes you are right and of course there would have been a H & S man wanting them issued with all the latest H & S kit and of course some one would have to be there to give tuition etc etc.

Beats me why anyone would want to buy a snow shovel. I made one years ago from a square of plywood, about the size of a paving slab, nailed to a batten to serve as a handle, and it's still doing the job. I also made a smaller one for dealing with heavier snow/slush.

The decent shovels are lightweight and strong. I could build one, yes. I still want an alu plough though. Might have to build that one though.

Really gets my goat these folk complaining that side roads don't get cleared. If people got off their lazy ar$e then it would be done in a jiffy. Me and ONE neighbour kept our road clear last year, and this week. Doesn't take long..........

Home made snow shovel - 10mm mdf sheet, about 60cm wide attached to an old broom handle - works a treat.

"Mr Cameron and his allies had the perfect opportunity here to get people back to work and as expected they have done nothing, it is easy to talk tough but harder to actually be tough. Here was a perfect opportunity to crack down on the minority of professionally long term unemployed. There would have been no harm what so ever in drafting in the long term unemployed to keep our streets and roads clear as was done in the fifties and sixties., all they needed was brooms and shovels".

Spoken like a true Tory.

Congratulations !!!

And how much snow have you shifted from the pavements to help your fellow citizens?

What is it they say -

"You don't have a dog and bark yourself" ?

Passed 2 people snow clearing whilst I was out on the bike today:
1. BMW (low ground clearance, RWD) in parking space on residental street with engine running, surrounded by 1' of snow. Guy standing next to it on carriageway looking bemused with a shovel full of snow trying to decided where to chuck it where it would still be out of the way.

2. Guy industriously shovelling about 6" off his driveway to make it passable. For his 4x4 Mistubishi pickup.

You don't understand, they don't need to shovel snow. There are peasants around which can do that.

In fairness, I do wonder whether there would be any mileage in setting up a volunteer scheme for when whether turns bad. When weather of whatever breed causes disruption, volunteers getting together to help clear things up. Needn't be anything too organised - no more than just a phone tree or similar on a street-size level. Several people working together would make light work of much larger areas, and help out those who can't help themselves.

And should the long term unemployed OR the long term employed (and anyone inbetween) want to join in, they'd be more than welcome...

I tried to get some snow shovels and stuff the other day and they've all sold out before the snow came.

Thoughts:
1. Doesn't anybody keep stuff from the previous year?
2. The snow shovels all sold out to people who aren't surprised to see snow in winter.
3. What's wrong with an ordinary shovel? Or even a spade?

Thanks for the congratulations. I have kept my own drive way clear and as We live in a small close there was little need for help. Yes I do have two small dogs that think they are large dogs and do all the barking that is needed. No I am not a Tory, true or other wise and I did learn my politics from a man who worked down the drift mines at fourteen and he certainly was no Tory but he did belive in a days work for a days pay who ever paid it.

By "snow shovel" I'm refering to any wide-mouthed, light weight shovel. I have a spade, spades are small and for digging. B&Q this week only had small spades and edging spades. When you try to scoop broken ice on to a spade it will slide off as there is no side support

So you've cleared your own driveway but not bothered to do anything about the pavements other than moan that the "professionally long term unemployed" haven't been rounded up and press ganged into clearing them for you?

Oh dear me. 1[sup]st[/sup] of all I am a Tory because I want the town pavements cleared and then I am a useless selfish moaner for not getting out and clearing the streets. This is wrong. If every one cleared the frontage of their premises the pavements would be cleared. For the record I believe that every able bodied person between eighteen and thirty should be trained in Civil Defence work and be liable to be called up in an emergency to assist the authority’s in cases of severe conditions such as the unexpected snow conditions we are experiencing and probably the flooding that will follow if there is a quick thaw.

Just got back from a truly magic walk that was partly slither because our local UCR has not been cleared and partly trespass because the local; very expensive golf course is closed to players. Over the years I have had personal contact with people who have never actually had a job for more than a week but many of them have made a good living by doing foreigners and using the allowance system that we have in this country. This I believe is fundamentally wrong and unfortunately despite the efforts of politicians from all sides condemning it, there seems no way way of stopping it, with out radical measures. In some families there are three and four generations that have known nothing else but benefit. They make up a large part of the professional long term unemployed and should be cracked down on.
