Just spotted a JCB clearing the next road over. Spoke to the driver and asked if he was going on to do my road as well. Nope, says he, not on his route (we live down a private road). The council had given him a route to follow and we were'nt on it.

H'mmm. Snow currently 3 feet deep in my road and looks like lasting till spring

Small encouragement later. Job Done

These guys must be making a fortune right now.

I am rather / very annoyed with the snow clearance in our area and I suspect that we are just average. I walked rather than rode in to town on Wednesday because of the treacherous condition of the road that connects us to the main road. The main road was clear but the pavements were not and three miles later in the town centre, including areas in front of the civic centre, police station and leisure centre the conditions could only be described as disgusting. The pavements were a slippery nightmare and the under passes were even worse. Mr Cameron and his allies had the perfect opportunity here to get people back to work and as expected they have done nothing, it is easy to talk tough but harder to actually be tough. Here was a perfect opportunity to crack down on the minority of professionally long term unemployed. There would have been no harm what so ever in drafting in the long term unemployed to keep our streets and roads clear as was done in the fifties and sixties., all they needed was brooms and shovels.

We must have someone in our street who is very important (not Vernon).Cos last year we got regular visits from the gritter .And guess what it's back this year .At least three times in just over a week .To be honest our street goes nowhere. We are a circle .

We used to live 2 doors down from the man who drove the snow plough. As a kid I was always most upset when he cleared the road, otherwise we would have been snowed in and no school.

Cush, They'd have the brooms and shovels sold off within hours of being given them or be off moonlighting like the bloke with the JCB- doing anything but what he's supposed to!

You can blame your local council for that, not the Government. Your council charge you a specific rate of council tax, and promise that you'll get your services for that fee.

If you feel you're not getting proper value from your council tax you need to complain to the council.
You know what the result is if enough people complain? Higher council tax to improve the situation for the future.

Gritting ain't free. All has to be paid for somehow.

I wondered why a gritter came down our unadopted street the other day (it's never happened before), I guess I've got a neighbour to thank...

Or you could blame lazy neighbours. I really don't see why people moan on endlessly about the councils clearing the roads and pavements. It really is up to residents to speed things along. It is deeply unrealistic for people expect to expect the council to do stuff about huge sections of pavements and side roads. One of the points about grit on side roads is it slushifies and freezes and refreezes and remains reasonably stubborn. It takes virtually no effort for a local to scoop it up and move it to the side of the road so there are passing points or 80% of the road freed up rather than 40%. Same with pavements, clear your section more people walk along its so it's pretty likely to stay clear. Bit weird if you ask me, it takes much more effort clearing a drive than the actual road.

I might be biased, but I reckon Hampshire County Council have been pretty good at clearing the roads this year. Still, there's plenty of minor roads, estates etc., which haven't seen a snow plough and probably never will, and so there are people moaning about the council not doing enough. I must be getting old, because I start muttering to myself "Do it yourself then..."

I cleared ice from the footpath in front of my house - took all of about ten minutes. Later I'll put down a little of the grit from the council gritbin as well. Not real effort involved, and will help stop someone from sliding over in front of my house - if everyone did the same the footpaths would be fine.

But no, folk are lazy and want everything done for them, but with lower taxes and without that pesky election thing either. Grrrrrrrr.

I too have wondered why we get the gritter in our steet. There's no-one of importance apart from me at our end.

On of my neighbours, slightly up the road is about 75. I cleared most of the drive yesterday morning, went in for lunch and when I came back out to finish up I noticed she'd cleared her driveway and path, and the pavement outside her house! :becool:

I tried to get some snow shovels and stuff the other day and they've all sold out before the snow came. Someone knew this was coming. Bet they're selling them for a fortune on ebay.

My Father has just started up as self employed, I said to him it might be worth doing peoples drives next time it happens. I have seen people out clearing drives for money this week, must be a good spinner.

Beats me why anyone would want to buy a snow shovel. I made one years ago from a square of plywood, about the size of a paving slab, nailed to a batten to serve as a handle, and it's still doing the job. I also made a smaller one for dealing with heavier snow/slush.
