Neoprene is bad for smelling like cats piddle. Key is to dry it as quick as you can. We tend to put any wet suits and 'my winter boots' near the dehumidifier to dry them quickly.

Putting said whiffy boots in the air flow of a dehumidifier may help, or it may stink the house out.

I used to have a make of running shoes that were bad for this. They smelled like cat pee. I think it was the materials/glue used rather than anything else as I’ve never had this again. I think it was an Adidas brand.

Yes these are Adidas too. Skol's link proves that this is probably an issue across the board on trainers where they CBA to fix the issue.

Can he rotate his trainers more? If you constantly wear the same pair then they can build up sweat and smell more.
I used to go out with a woman and her feet stunk and it was from wearing cheap socks.
It sounds in your sons case it maybe the boots sock that surrounds the ankle isnt allowing the foot the breathe properly because its all hemmed in.

yes but he only wears them once a week for PE, and occasionally when he's with me every other weekend. Looking on the internet I can see now that it's a glue issue

My son (12) likes to wear the Astro trainers/boots for football and as general trainers. The kind he likes have the "sock" surrounding around the ankle. Even after wearing them once from new, they've started to absolutely stink! And I mean, we can't even keep them in the house as the smell is so bad.
Not really what you said.

Listen folks.... Trying to wash/clean the odour out of these shoes is a waste of time. The smell is inherent in the materials used in the manufacture.

As for the sport wash and various other treatments, I have several (cheap) items of cycling kit that just pong no matter what I do to treat them. I also have some bits that just don't ever smell, like my 1996 GT cycle shirt.

I've tried all the tricks. Vinegar, bicarb, Milton's, Halo sport wash, Dettol disinfectant, Dettol wash additive, drying in the sun and probably some more that I can't remember. Some work for a couple of uses, others not at all. I wash my kit every ride, or after a ride to work and ride back, but some of it just starts to smell as soon as it gets warm and slightly damp from the body heat if riding. And before anyone says it, I shower after every ride, on arrival at work and again on returning home......
