My son (12) likes to wear the Astro trainers/boots for football and as general trainers. The kind he likes have the "sock" surrounding around the ankle. Even after wearing them once from new, they've started to absolutely stink! And I mean, we can't even keep them in the house as the smell is so bad.

I've tried spraying them with a vinegar solution which works reasonably well but after wearing them again the smell just comes back.

Are there any other solutions people have tried, or would a real leather trainer be the best bet?

I know trainers don't let your feet breath properly, but as a teenager with all the hormones etc going on, I don't know if buying expensive leather trainers/boots would be any good?

Thoughts please

my feet used to stink and I think it was because i always wore poly-something towelling socks. Started wearing cotton socks and they don't stink anymore. But maybe it was because i was young and my feet perspired more?

Bicarb is apparently a good odour eater, but it didn't work very well on my smelly shoes when my feet used to stink.

When young, a guy at work always wore trainers with a whiff.

Socks need to be 70% minimum cotton. But near 100% wool is far better.

This is a known problem with some of the materials/glues that are used to make training shoes. I think if you google it you will find many tales of the problem. I think there was even a case of Nike(?) refunding customers because a particular model of trainer was so bad.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
You need a combination of washing his feet more, using powders for foot odor like school powder and sprays, pure cotton or wool socks and go barefoot whenever to allow his feet to breath.

Odor eaters might be good as well.

Re-read the OP. It's not the feet that are the problem, it's the trainers. Some of them just smell bad once they get damp.

Smelly trainers: bung them in the washing machine at maximum permitted temperature (50°C is good guess) with an ample application of Bold washing liquid. Works every time for me — no guarantees.
