If its people you're looking to track Google Latitude works on Android phones, and I think it may be available for Crapple devices as well. Another I know works well on Android is GPS Tracking Pro, again there's an iphone version.

Does anyone know what sort of data usage there is (for those of us on payg deals) on these auto-tracking apps. I'm guessing it's sod all.... though 'sod all' could add up on longer rides.
I looked at how much latitude was using and your estimate is spot on.

Bit of thread necro here, but still...

Anyone know how things have changed in a year? I believe Google have continued their policy of getting rid of useful stuff by dropping Latitude for instance.

At the moment I don't own a smart phone, but I think tracking would be handy to have for the Ride London 100 so my family have an idea where I am when they spectate. One of them has an Android smart phone (Galaxy S3).

Also pertinent, I'm a cheap git.

So what would be the best option for me to get some sort of tracking? Just buy another (second hand) Android smart phone and set it up on that? Or are there other options now? If I bought my wife the iPhone she's been craving for years, are there Apps that would allow the S3 to be tracked by it? (Because I know which one of the two phones would end up in my backpack!)

Ta.

Google has locate my phone through https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager which would work through the browser on the iPhone I guess, you'd have to share your account details.

Live tracking on the cycling apps (Endomondo, MapMyRide etc) tends to be a premium feature most of them feature it apart from Strava I think, my Garmin 810 can do it through my phone by bluetooth.

You need data when you are riding which shouldn't be a problem in London, but you can;t just buy any phone and use it as you would need a SIM with a data contract.

Your cheapest option would be to borrow the Galaxy take it with you and the person who's phone it is would need to temporarily load the password for their google account out (remember this would be EVERTHING google, mail google+ etc etc)

Or you could swap the SIM.

Or take the iPhone and use the other phone to track it with Apples locate a friend service.

Has my wife told you to presume the iPhone is a given? :-)

At the moment the only connected smart device we own is the 19yr olds S3 anything else would be a purchase.

My Garmin (Touring+) doesn't have live connect, but I do have a premium account on MapMyRide so using something in conjunction with the could be an option, although don't the live tracking apps eat battery?
