You can get 10" windows tablets that are effectively a Laptop - I have a 3 year old Linx 10" tablet - it's nippy as it's all Solid State and is sufficuient enough for Word, internet and watching movies - we tend to keep it at the caravan.

You didn't mention a budget but Linx Tablets are cheap as chips; I love my Linx 1010b which is now an old model. It boots in an instant and runs Office perfectly satisfactorily. For such an apparently low spec' it's amazing how well it runs. It came with a proper detachable keyboard too so runs in laptop or tablet mode (which Windows 10 automatically figures out). It has two full sized USB ports, HDMI and micro USB.

She has more than likely got office 365 for free via uni I have it will depend on what the uni use to run the email system.
Just to let you know both she and you are able to get Apple student discount. Another way to cut cost over than 2rd hand iPad is Apple own refurbished section on the Apple site they are cheeper and still come with full 12 month guarantee. On a side note she is also in able to have a NUS extra card.

I'd not trust for sure my uni work to anything cheep running MS. Don't be too bothered about applications running on anything other than MS machine as that long dead in the water. Been happily an all Apple house for years both me and Mrs 73 have done a fair bit of study and used them for work with no issues across multiple systems.

You can quite happily type on a tablet some better then others on an iPad it's seamless. Paired it with a bluetooth keyboard if you feel better using it that way. Ether way it will be fine. Remember to factor in any software you need on top of the machine price when you are looking round comparing. The other thing to think about is size and weight it's so easy to have a tablet on the desk in lessons or in the library than than a laptop. No need to pack to up if you just need to go off and get a book. You just walk off with it. I've used both iPads and my MacBook for studying and writing stuff up you don't really miss the days when you just have iPad. They also handy to have when teaching too no need to stand rooted to spot just walk around the room with it. Makes teacher more fun I find.

Only you can decide in the end just think about the practical bits the tech bits less so and remember cheep bits of plastic are cheep for a reason. :okay:

If you want Microsoft Office, buy a copy on Ebay. You can get a copy from a scrapped machine for about £8 if you shop around. You get sent an email with a download link and also an activation key. It doesn't require any skill. I've bought three copies over the years and they all work perfectly.

That's amazing. Based on what you said I quickly found this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Microsof...=item261564993e:g:Z9sAAOSwyhVcbeeO:rk:28:pf:0 would listings like this actually work? I haven't bought any Office stuff for a while, but I think the last time I did I paid £30 for Word on a CD. Have things moved on?. It's another factor to add to the mix while I'm trying to decide whether to wipe this laptop and reload Windows 7 clean.

My laptop packed up a couple of years ago so I took it to a computer consultant round here so he could rescue the contents of the hard drive. I asked him if I could swap my legitimate copy of Microsoft Office over to a new machine, and if so, how could I do it. He told me not to bother, but to buy a sub-£10 entirely legitimate download on Ebay, which I subsequently did. Since then, I've gone to other Ebay vendors and bought the same for my wife and daughter. At that price for a lifetime version of Office, the very worst that can happen is that you lose a few quid, but that's extremely unlikely.

Bit late to the party here, but I use a Lenovo Ideapad 100 and LibreOffice. Cost me £80 new off the Bay of E, and it works pretty well. Except the spacebar is a little narrow.

I have a Microsoft Pro 4 running Windows 10. I was lucky to win it in a competition as I could not have afforded to buy one. It's a great combination of a small laptop and tablet. If I ever need to replace it this is the first machine I would look at.
