Mine's an HP Pavilion with a 15 inch screen, so it can hardly be classed as small. However, it has a 256 GB solid state hard drive which is blisteringly fast if you spend time on the internet. Waiting time for pages to load is virtually non-existent, as is the time to boot up when you turn the machine on. I can't recommend solid state drives too highly. Apart from that, get lots of RAM, say 6Mb, and an i5 processor. That way, you don't waste your life staring at a blank screen waiting for things to happen.

Does she really need a laptop or would a tablet suit her better?
We've a laptop and Kindle fire ( tablet ? ) at home. She was wanting something smaller if you know what I mean ? Looked briefly at a Chromebook,I haven't a clue.

+1 for tablet much better idea and a good one will out live any notebook. If she going to be using it out the home then good battery life is must. Have to say for simple to use and long battery life i'd be looking at an iPad for me do what you want and much more. Used one for years never missed i've done many an assignment on mine great too for reading course materials too. Plenty of 2rd hand ones if you want keep cost down.

At the moment there are hardly any decently sized netbooks on the market. Only with small SSD disks (128GB or less). As soon as there are photo's or films involved, that would be too small.
That's why I just orderd a refurbished older netbook with a lavish 1TB HD as upgrade.

Thanks for the replies, its just something small, portable that can be used on the train. Not really for the internet as such.More for typing documents ect.

Try looking at a small Asus convertible, all solid state, and the screen is a touch screen.
Cn be had in Chromebook or Windows flavours. Ridiculously thin and light.

If it's going to be used primarily for entering data (as you seem to be suggesting) a laptop will beat a tablet every day of the week. It's what they're designed for

You can use a tablet for data entry of course, but it's a compromise and isn't as efficient at this as a laptop

That's the sort of thing. If not using the wifi on the train, turn of to prolong battery.

Depending on your budget, the Surface Go is really good. Very compact. Can have a keyboard attached if required (although that's extra) and runs proper windows.
