City Jets are great, I had the 26 x 1.5s. Ran them at about 65psi, no probs. I think I had inner tubes that were supposedly for 1.75" tyres minimum but had no issues.
Mind you, I only rode them for about 30 miles then put the knobblers back on.
If you need to get more air in but haven't got a foot pump, just drop into your local bike shop or Halfords and borrow theirs, it won't cost you anything.
You should, calorie for calorie, still be quicker as the Sirrus runs 700c wheels which are I think 28 inches in diameter rather than your better half's 26.
By the way, an alternative to speeding up her bike would have been slowing yours down by getting thicker, knobblier tyres on the Sirrus, then you could both have got off road a bit too!
