When going down hill on my local route 22 mph ish i hit a right hander and my back wheel feels as if its slipping from under me .Allways at this one point my tires have done 1200 mile could it just be the road serface that is slippy

If the tyre is hard then one or both of the two causes you mention are to blame. Either way the solution at the time is to go slower. If the rear tyre has a pronounced flat area in the centre then it will be time to replace the tyre.

the tires seem ok i have ordered some continental gp 4000s to see if it is the tires

Great tyres but not ideal for winter as they cut up pretty easily.

I save mine for the better months and stick to Conti Gatorskins the rest of the time.

I'd do the same if I were you, unless money is no object of course, otherwise Gatorskins or GP 4 Seasons would be the way to go IME.

Pump them up hard - more than 60psi, up to 100 depending on the wheel/tyre. Don't brake through the bend.

will have a look at those tires thanks when you say cut up what do you mean by that and how many miles would i get out of them

Have them on about 90 psi now but i am breaking as i am nervous dont know whether its just me as ive only just compleated my first 1000 mile and getting faster by the ride .Its just this 2 bends that spoil my ride

Just as a different idea, maybe you need to move your weight backwards a little more if the downhill and braking is transferring weight to the front :smile:

The GP4000s is a performance tyre rather than an endurance tyre. If you imagine running across broken glass as en extreme example, then the GP4000's will suffer more damage than something like the Gatorskin, and subsequently they are more prone to punctures.

Like I said they GP4000s is a great tyre, but just don't expect them to last like the endurance versions.

As for mileage that depends on too many factors. My tyres never last anyway due to the condition of the roads around here, so even if someone told me a tyre would last 5000 miles, under my ownership I know full well that it wouldn't.

I go for puncture protection first and foremost these days, and touch would Gatorskins have never let me down :thumbsup:

thanks for that have ordered the gp 4000s but will order the others now you just know what i am going to ask next gaterskins or 4 seasons ?

I'd almost bet that nervous braking is your problem. I've taken bends comfortably at 30-40 mph recently (downhill!) that I almost crashed on at 20 mph when I first started cycling again. If you really need to slow down for a bend, then do most of your braking before you get there!

One tip that helps a lot when cornering is to push your outside pedal down hard. It really helps your weight distribution and to 'plant' your bike firmly on the road. Try it and see what you think.
 
My Conti Ultra Sports are like playing Russian Roulette in the wet, the Specialized All Conditions and Bontrager All Weather have both been good to me. The Spesh tyres were good right until the canvas came through.

hand on heart i think you are probably spot on i will try the pedal down hard method before i fit the new tires thanks
