It isn't quite fair to say the Osymmetric rings are asymmetric in the math sense. They have 180 deg rotational symmetry and if they are faithful to an elliptical shape, they'll have 2 reflectional planes of symmetry.

I don't think they are.

They come and go, and have been around in one form or another for years. Sometimes riders used them and claimed getting over TDC was easier, but at the end of it all, a 39 is a 39 and a 53 is a 53, the ratios remain the same and the odd bit of trouble put most of us off. The new rings might be better and more accurately engineered, and they claim to have a bit of science behind them. In the end it's what the rider is happy with, because a comfortable can help you suffer just a little bit more, and that might be the difference between a win for the team or not.

A couple of years back, David Millar wanted to stick with his usual Rotor Q chainrings on the Giro (52/42), no compact option available so the mechanics ended up fitting his bike with a SRAM XX (mountain) derailleur and 11-36 cassette to give him the low range.

I'm not aware of any ride which is happy with the TT position or consider it to be comfortable, they put up with this because it is exceptionally effective for the purpose intended.
Also If a given rider such as Wiggo is happy with Osymetric chain rings on a TT stage or flat stage I remain curious regarding the characteristics which makes the ride unhappy to use them during mountain stages.
