Funny isn't it - it used to be that you cocked your leg over the cross bar and if you had about an 1" clearence from the top of the bar to your 'tender parts' job was a good un.

Oh I wish it were that easy

I haven't finalised the order yet (I need a reference number from the letter I have left at home) so I will measure my 'bits' later and post up my dimensions

Cheers,
Daniel.

Amnesia, do us a favour.

Measure the distance from the floor to the little dip in the top of your thoracic cage just below your Adam's apple.
Measure the distance from your shoulder ball centre to the tips of your fingers, with straight arm.

I will tell you what size frame to buy.

151cm to thoracic cage thingy
74.5cm from shoulder to finger tip

How does this help  ?

Cheers,
Daniel.

Yes you have got a dilemma.

Is your Inside leg measurement correct?

Is it Standing H minus Seated H ?

The Spesh catalogue 54cm size Allez Sport has a toptube length way short for your torso and arm length.

At 5'11", I would expect an Inside Leg of 34", in which case a 56 is your size.
You might need a 130mm stem.

If I explained how I got these figures, I would be giving away fraebuilder's secrets.

OK... here goes :

Standing height (180cm) - seated height (100cm) = 80cm / 31.5"

Inside leg using the book method = 81cm / 32" (ergo the 'wife method' of 33" is inaccurate).

So it looks more like 31.5 or 32" inside leg... does that make things easier ?

Cheers,
Daniel.

It makes things worse.

You have a short leg for your height. 44.5% is low.

The standover height you desire is 765mm, half way between a Specialized Allez 52 and 54 frame size.

Your Torso and arm length say you need a 705 reach, which is the 54 frame size with a 130 ~ 140 mm stem. - Not unknown - I've seen a 150mm Cinelli.

You will only be able to decide the stem length after you have set the seat height and plumbed your knee over the pedal spindle to set the seat fore-aft position.

Its looking like a 54 would suit you better with a long stem.

The 56 has a standover of 800. You should be 'tight' on this, ie not much room.

My Inside leg is 33" for my height of 69" ( 48% national average ). I have a 57cm Peugeot 531 and it IS tight. I have a 54cm SWorks and it fits a dream.

My concerns were raised when I noticed your leg length was short for your height. It is not unusual, but these guys end up buying a frame too big, based on their height and what the idiots in Halfords say.

When the bike arrives, you should be able to get your first three fingers between the top tube and your crotch when standing over it. If you can't, tell them they have made a mistake and get the 54 for you.

Well, at least that's proven that I am a gibbon

I haven't confirmed the size yet as I needed my voucher reference to complete the order.

Soooo... I think I am going to get the 54cm and adjust the reach by changing the stem... best of both worlds. Might be a slightly more aggressive head down position due to the shorter head tube, but I prefer that to sitting upright. (My MTB saddle is 3" above the bars on a 17" frame and very comfortable to ride 20+ miles).

Thank you everyone for your help, particularly jimboalee

Cheers,
Daniel.

Handlebar clamp height is set by swapping and changing the spacer rings under the stem on the Ahead/steerer.

Your riding position will be OK when your Lumbar Vertebrae are at 45 Degrees to the ground.

Some cyclists go to great measures to get the riding position correct, but it pays dividends on a LONG ride.

Well that's just ####### typical...

I have just had an email from Halfords Cycle2Work saying that their Specialized stockists are out of stock of the Allez Sport and won't be getting any more as the 2010 bikes are due out in 3 months xx(

Off we go again

At least the Boardman Team only comes in small, medium and large, so that's an easy choice xx(

Have you considered getting a custom built bike? Given that it seems you've an unusual body geometry it would appear the ideal way to go, as you'd get the exact fit.

Not sure how much your budget runs to but you should be able to pick up a good custom built bike from £1000 and many will take cycle2work vouchers.

Or do you need to use Halford specifically?

Unfortunately I am stuck with Halfords due to the agreement between them and Atos.

The (medium) Boardman felt comfortable on a test ride although I will still need a longer stem, so I will probably end up with that.

I just want to get cracking and get fit again...

The dilemma gets worst.

I've just been into the company's medical dept.

I'm shrinking . That's superanuation for you.

I've got to dump this 54 SWorks and get a brand new 52 SWorks Tarmac SL2
