What's the advantage of a single speed mountain bike?

If you mainly cycle on the flat then you can do without gears on a road bike but I'd have thought they were essential on a mountain bike. Do they just have one low gear?

If they had only one high gear they wouldn't go very far.

Simply, there is less to go wrong and if the gear you choose is enough to get you up gravity will get you down.

Here for rides.
Lighter, simpler, quieter (most important for me), more zen-like, less prone to go wrong, and they do wonders for your leg strength. Every one should own one, pref based on a high end late 90's steel frame, but I do keep a modern 27 speed one in the shed too.

The same advantages (and disadvantages) as a single speed road bike I'd say - they are lighter, cheaper, simpler and more efficient*** than the same mountain bike with gears.

Clearly they do have just one gear, but as for how low it is, that's up to you. In Yorkshire, you'd struggle with a high gear. In East Anglia it might be fine.

I'd have thought the gear would be a medium to high one. Unless you spend all your time riding up 25% climbs and freewheeling back down them, a very low gear would have a very low maximum speed unless you can pedal at 200+ rpm!

*** If the gear you have happens to be suited to the terrain you are riding over!

Off the shelf a high end single speeds will have 34 maybe a 36 tooth chain ring and around a 15/16 freewheel, they are geared spinny but more than nippy enough for single track and certainly enough gear wise for most rolling hills.

Just because a geared bike has a 22 granny ring with a 34 at the back it doesn't mean that gear is that usable, the extremes tend not to be.

Try winching a bike up really steep fireroad in the very lowest gear, it's just as quick to shoulder it and walk.

None.

Gears don't work in muddy conditions.

Yes they do.

They are great fun and take less maintainence! I ride fully rigid as well in the winter so that when I get home from a night ride I am not spending ages out in the cold washing my bike.

Because its a bloody good laugh. It also changes how you ride, you adopt the 'just get on with it' style.
Recently converted an old carrera fury as gears knackered just for fun. Its quite satisfying removing everything but the brake levers off the bike. Fitted 36/18 as it seems a ratio of 2 to 1 is advised as a good starting point. But if you look at the american forums on the subject, most of them seem to go lower for the hills and technical bits. It seems to be a big scene over there with some lovelly looking bikes in the galleries.
First thing that struck me was the directness of the drive, you could feel the crank doing some work. Also the quiet on even rough tracks was great. Took it with me on vacation last year for a bit of fun and was surprised what could be done off road. Dropped the back wheel into a couple of gullies that would have definitely ripped off the rear mech, so that was quite a good feeling.
The only big draw back is actually level ground, spinning like hell doing about 13mph. But just need to accept it and enjoy the ride. Also i guess it won't be ideal on steep/narrow technical bits as you can get bogged down. But i am someone who doesn't mind throwing bike over my shoulder and walking it, as i only do it for occasional fun and i do enjoy hiking anyway.
Overall, we shouldn't get too hung up what is best ( 27 or one speed). I think a ss mtb should be a bit of fun and a great way of breathing life into an old bike.
