There were certainly a lot of aggressive motorists around in Lancashire on Sunday. Personally I always ride 3 feet from the kerb unless I'm on small quiet roads were I'd be putting myself in danger. I can't see there is much difference between two abreast and a solo rider 3 feet out of the gutter. I've always believed I have to position myself so as to force drivers to overtake correctly.

The logic of this is that two cyclists riding two abreast still takes up a narrower space then a car in the same part of the road.

I agree with other posts that if it's a long peleton it makes more sense for people to be two abreast for ease of overtaking. Basically if there is room and no blind spots then there's nothing wrong with riding this way and if there's traffic behind or ahead on a narrow road then one person drops back behind the other person.

However, if it was about logic rather than anger...

I think that it's something to do with driving that makes people intolerant. Having to share a tiny space with so many other people getting in the way of each other.

Mostly I find motorists OK in my neck of the woods and for those that do give me extra space or wait for me to turn right instead of trying to overtake I always try and manage a wave.

Only time I've ever been beeped was when I had the temerity to pull out onto a road as close as 100 yards in front of a car. I pulled out, he beeped, a few seconds passed whilst he caught me up and then he beeped again as he easily overtook me - there being no oncoming traffic on a two lane road. The only inconvenience that I had caused him was the effort he needed to sound his horn. Too much to hope that he reflected on the incident and decided that he had raised his blood pressure for no good reason.
