Silly pannier question

Hi, I need to start by saying this is a very silly question. I am somewhat embarrased. I feel I should be able to work this out!

I have some panniers, different designs for front and rear racks. Both designs have an adjustable hook at the bottom of the rear of the pannier. Is this designed to hook on to the rack itself? I assume this is the case, but i can't get either pannier to hook to the rear rack i currently have. Or should i hook this onto a bungee or something??

They should hook onto something on your rack. Have a go at sliding them round a bit to attach to one of the pannier rack tubes.

What rack it is btw?

hi mcshroom, yeah i have had a good old slide about with the hooks but to no joy!

Can't remember the model of the rack, it's somewhat like a nastier version of this . I've had it for a few years but only used it for a rack pack

I was thinking about buying new tubus racks now that i have panniers, but i thought it a sensible first step to understand how the panniers work

The rear pannier (looks like an Altura with the Klik-fix system to me) in the top photo has a hook on a sliding bar - which is locked in place with a screw. Undo the screw and the hook will slide along the bar. Fit the pannier to the rack and slide the hook along the bar until it passes behind any suitable tube on the rack, then lock it with the screw.

Remove the pannier by pressing the red button.

When you refit the pannier, you have to fiddle the hook behind the tube you previously slid the hook behind, before clipping the pannier down onto the top horizontal tube. The hook stops the pannier from swinging out when you are cornering and keeps it attached to the bottom of the rack. Simples!

Can't help you with the pannier in the bottom pic, sorry.

Is it possible that the rack and the panniers weren't designed for each other? That might explain why the lower hooks have nowhere to go. As long as the panniers don't fall off, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have to admit that when I got panniers with the same fitting system I didn't realise that the top clips also adjust! With all three clips able to adjust you ought to be able to set them up in such a way they'll fit any pannier. Check that the back of your foot doesn't hit the pannier on the way round though!

When you install the pannier the bottom clip should slide into place, and then place the top clips onto the bar of the rack and check they've clicked into place. The top clips also have removable padding inserts which you can swap around or remove, depending on the thickness of the rack bars.

The hook at the bottom works pretty much the same way in both panniers, in that you unscrew something to enable the hook to slide along the rail. The Vaude pannier is slightly more adjustable, as you can unscrew that bottom hook completely and move it onto the bottom of the oval rail if you can't get it to fit on any of the legs of the rack as it is. As _aD mentions, the clips at the top of the panniers (that sit on top of the rack) are usually also adjustable - the idea being that they will fit on just about any rack.

thanks for the help all.

I think I was attempting to attach them correctly all along but my rack has a problem. The rack can be used with either 26" or 700c wheels. To achieve this it has a little "extension" section which you bolt on if you have 700c wheels. I have 700c wheels (well my bike does) so the extra bit is bolted on. This extra section sticks out quite a bit meaning the bottom of the pannier is pushed away from the rack meaning the bottom hook cannot hook around the rack tubes.

I was going to buy new racks anyway, would the panniers I have work with tubus racks? (or an alternative not-quite so expensive option?! I'm going touring in a month or so need to have confidence they'll survive).

thanks again

The bottom fixing on the panniers are adjustable

Unscrew with scewdriver. Move it to desired location. Screw. Done

Same on the top Klik Fix fixings

Hope that helps ?

I had a bit of trouble trying to get the EBC panniers (same sliding bottom hook) to fit to the rack on my EBC tourer. The only way to fit them on is to have the hook at the very end (rear) of the bar and pointing forwards as the dog leg of the rack and the canti brakes get in the way in other positions. This means that the hook can, and has, fallen off when the bag is heavily loaded. Also the top hooks on the bag have to adjusted so that the bag sits right off the end of the rack, I don't really like having it so far back but I haven't got a choice.

I would much prefer an upwards or downwards pointing hook or one on a bungee to the horizontal one as it could fit anywhere on the rack easily.

From the side, the extra bit which is clamped to the bottom of the rack:

now from above, the extra bit sticks out meaning the pannier is pushed away from the rack

While taking these pics i had another go with the altura pannier, with a bit of man handling i did manage to get the hook around the middle rack down tube - surely it shouldn't be this hard though! Bloody cheap rack, buy cheap buy twice etc.

Tubus then?
