Much nicer. Well; shinier 🤣……

IMG_8886.jpeg

Cha-cha ching. Checkout my bling 😂😂

IMG_8885.jpeg

To be fair though…..as much as I’ve battled through Winter solely on this bike - that i really do like. A couple of short rides on the Sunnier bikes in the fleet (When getting them ready for Summer) has quickly reminded me ‘what I’m missing’.

Suffice to say I’m looking forward to ‘retiring’ the Carrera Subway and instantly gain some speed, less output, bigger / more simple gear range. shinier paint 😂😂 blah blah

Cheers for looking 😁

Pair of DMR V12’s (Sealed bearings, CroMo axle, replaceable pins - all rebuild able); for the Hybrid ordered:

IMG_8953.jpeg

This means the Hybrid, Gravel and MTB all now have the same pedals as above. As well as the same Charge Spoon seat on all 3. [4 if you include the beater]. And the same Skyway (BMX effectively) grips on Hybrid, MTB and Winter beater. ***Tape on Gravel obviously…..😉

Fits in nicely with me being so completely anal: and all contact points being as uniform as they can be. I feel quite relieved 🤣🤣

I tried pedals like those and hated them!

I am used to (MTB type) SPDs and being able to turn my feet a few degrees either way.

On this type of pedal I kept finding my feet were subtly out of position and having to lift them off the pins each time to realign them. Sometimes it took me a few attempts to find the right position. That would happen multiple times during each ride. The worst part was when it was happening on very steep climbs when lifting my feet off the pedals was the last thing that I wanted to do!

Each to their own Colin hey ! I’ve tried various clip-ins. Had no issue with any 😁 Just prefer flats on all bikes to cover a multitude of riding types. If I had one iota of doubt I’d change all in a heart-beat.

The chaps I ride with mock me silly - as I’m the only one on flats. To be fair they’ve also mocked my Winter rider, my lack of fuelling during a ride…. Blah 🤣🤣

V.interesting thread! I've enjoyed reading it thus far.

It has also reminded me to check the little pad retention bolts on my Shimano calipers as, apparently, they can suffer from bimetal corrosion. Although mine don't seem to have thus far.

Glad my random, over-thought musings kept you amused 👍

More than amused tbh.

I like your in-depth writing, very much akin to @wafter 's literary efforts, which are also very informative.

Myself and the Bike shop tried a couple of simple things - after I heard a ‘dry-creak’. But soon realised BB was the thing to investigate. Today I’ve upgraded to a sealed, Aluminium bodied, something or other flange blah blah and had the BB on the beater cleaned, threads tickled and frame faced whilst in there. Should see a few years use without worry. And felt and sounded awesome riding home….👌 The one coming out was 11 years old and original equipment 😳 So had done better than OK !!

I’ve also Spring cleaned the MTB today. As well as sorting a very slightly rubbing rear brake by way of caliper alignment. And sorted (Amazingly I thought !) what I thought was either a sticky rear caliper piston or a dodgy master cylinder - as I had a slowly retracting rear brake lever - and of course pistons / pads more importantly perhaps.

Turned out a play with the rear brake hose positioning by sliding it along the cable ties holding in in place, altering how the excess at the front was ‘looped’ solved all. Very simple. Glad I didn’t get into pushing out pistons / stripping master cylinders for no reason 👍

Also tilted seat back a couple of degrees. And fitted the new DMR V12 polished Magnesium pedals 😍

50km Coastal ride this Morning on the ‘freshly revived’ Trek FX3 Hybrid.

From the off; it became clear the seat was tipped slightly too far forward - for my current preference 🤷‍♂️ (Did actually look angled slightly forward - which was the way I kept ‘slipping’) *Which was off course easily sorted once home 😁

And despite being ok when I stuck it away for Winter Hibernation…The gear changing was average at best from the off 🙄

Once my ride was done, I showered and changed and sauntered down to my LBS to see what’s occurring.

They immediately said ‘Gear hanger looks a little bent’. Good ! Because we’ve immediately identified a problem (Not quite sure how though - having literally sat in a stand in the garage all Winter and not moved once) 🙄

They also told me the standard Shimano gear cable had a coating on the outside they’ve had issues with before. So the inner cable was swapped for a Slic-Cable, they also found the cutting of the outer cable from the Factory….was er: rough. And there would certainly have been friction there too.

After new cable, index adjusting, hanger straightened, outer cable trimmed and some uprated adjuster fitted (?) the 5 mile ride home was on a different Planet to the Mornings ride gear-change wise. £15 all-in very well spent 👍
