Inspired by this thread I've just searched for, 'what is a raspberry pi?'

I'm still a bit.....

Wouldn't it be easier to have an unsmart TV or at least turn it off when not in use?

I mentioned it to my S-in-L- he says he uses them in all sorts of things, so next time he's up he's going to see if he can set something up here! This is exciting, but just a bit concerned that should they go wrong I'll be stuck!

I have a pi zero on my network working as a ham radio digital repeater. They really are very versatile and use almost no power at all, it's really hard to even measure the watts they use it's that minimal. I'll put the pi-hole in a little box and power it from the USB port on my home router, hopefully there's enough grunt out of the router to do that, then velcro the box near it and connect via ethernet.

Edit: My router can put out 900 milliamps, more than twice what the raspi needs

Try buying one these days, all the manufacturers are turning their R&D to supplying smart TVs - which is what most customers (but not all) want.
You are probably right. I haven't had to buy a television for over ten years. I have no reason to buy a new one at this point in time.

Beware, early ones can peak at more than that during boot, which sometimes causes odd effects and reliability issues on current limited supplies.

My main use for a Pi is as a docker container server running things like my Home Assist automation.

They are great little devices and the later ones are quite capable compared the early devices.

According to specs, the Pi 2 Model B draws only 400ma under 400% CPU. That's why I quoted that figure, it's about as much as it's ever going to demand. But yeah, if it doesn't work I have millions of USB power adaptors, but I prefer the simplicity of taking the power from the router if it works.

I have it working now. The number of lists is reduced on my version, had to add some manually. Will be interesting to see how the smart tv reacts!
