Shoulder problem

Have had bad shoulder (back of shouler) with pain down right arm for over a week now. I think it's muscular as the pain eases when my arm is at rest and I have full movement,
but being off the bike is annoying so time to pack the painkillers and just get on with it I think!

Does the bike exacerbate it? If so, make sure the set up in correct

Have made a few adjustments but have ridden this mountain bike for about ten months with only a few niggles. I do think that I tense my shoulders too much though. Will ensure I relax shoulders and that my arms stay bent in future.
However any
advice is much appreciated thanks so I'll treat myself to a bike fit if it doesn,t improve.

Question, sounds bizarre, but humour me with an answer. Do you find it difficult for example to reach into rear cycling pockets or (say) reach up your back using the hand/arm connected to the bad shoulder?

No restriction at all with movement. Just pain from back of shoulder down arm when I've used that arm for a while. Have rested and stretched but probably need to improve my core strength. Many thanks for all of the advice. Much appreciated.

My partner had this - could be a slight tear in the rotator cuff, at rest it ease's but then re- tears on movement. Get it checked out, it can be caused by tiny bone spurs catching the cuff ligament.

You need to rest it for a couple days, use cold compression to get inflammation down. I had a re-occurring knee issue for years, I couldn't do any serious activity especially run but even bike. I never gave it enough rest time, I always rushed back when it started to get better. You can use a blood flow stimulator before you go biking which will increase elasticity and circulation for 4 hours and work in prevention. It'll also help to rebuild damaged tissues by encouraging blood flow bringing oxygen and nutrients to the tissues. This is what helped me to finally get over my problematic knee. See a doctor if it persists. Shoulders are complex joints, and any soft tissue strains can take time to heal.

Having had a shoulder decompression following two years of pain after an RTA, it's worth it in the long run - took about 18 months after surgery to be almost 100% (that's hammering it on a bike).

did you ever sort this problem? I had a similar problem for years, seen a few GPs, physio......... did endless exercises for rotator cuff muscles........ in the end I asked the doc for a scan..............had scan, and they found a huge lump of calcium growth in my shoulder than no amount of stretching, strengthening or physio was ever going to cure my problem. A simple op and problem fixed!
