Buy some wooden dowel. Drill the holes to same size as dowel, then with Gorilla expanding glue hammer the dowel into the holes. Let it all go hard overnight, the re drill new holes. Do it right do it once
That sounds quite a bit more bother than the matchstick trick 😀
It does, but he can always do it properly later when he has run out of match sticks![]()
I couldn't find any matches yesterday, so used a wooden kebab skewer.
Now you've opened another can of worms. Kebab skewers are made from bamboo, ten times harder than the pine door frame. This means that the screw will now no longer be centered in the hinge, because it will take the path of least resistance, which is adjacent to the skewer. This makes the screws sit skew and when I see that I can't sleep.
I truly am doomed. Well actually not, because I needed slightly higher holes. So the bamboo worked to my advantage. All's well. Sleep easy.

For holding the door at the right height whilst I get the first screw in, I lay a fulcrum on the floor, place a lever over it, put the door on the end of the lever, then operate it with my foot. Another way that's useful for when you're leaning out of an upstairs window or up a ladder refitting the opener into the frame is to put a headless screw into one of the holes so that it'll locate the hinge in position and take some of the weight whilst you get the first screw in.
