For ultimate comfort go commando, I don't think they are actually designed for use with underwear and If you use cotton underwear they will retain moisture completely voiding the sweat wicking ability of the lycra, cotton really holds onto moisture..yuck!

If I'm wearing padded shorts I don't wear underwear, though I do wear liner shorts if I know I'm going to need to wear them again the next day before I can wash them.

The towel trick........
Especially useful when touring

When you wash your shorts or liners, roll them in a towel and then dance on the towel.

Then hang them up with a clip type clothes hanger. They will be fully dry the following morning

Padded shorts / liners / tights etc are designed to wick moisture away from the body (as well as providing additional comfort, not having seams in all the wrong places and so on) and are therefore - IMHO - more hygienic than cotton knickers for vaginal discharge. And I can also report that they cope surprisingly well with one of those 'not making to a toilet in time' incidents if you're on your period. *sigh*

If I'm popping into town, I don't normally bother wearing padded liners but always wear them or lycra for rides over 20 miles, which seems to be my comfort threshold.

Lycra has an unfortunate habit of becoming see through, and the wearer is often the last to realise!
...but there's ¼" of sponge and coolmax over the naughty bits, so the translucency of lycra just teases voyeurs... but modesty remains intact at all times

Go commando, and be at one with the bike
