My normal rides are now between thirty and fifty miles and at 67 and only riding two months I think that's pretty good
Pretty good? It's fantastic! Well done - a lot of people would be quitting cycling at that age, not starting.
It reminds me of this guy

because he was also 67 when he took up bike riding - he's now 100 years old and still going strong.

Hi Psychic,

I hope you have not given up! You don't seem to have come on here for a while.

When I started a few weeks ago, my first ride to work was 5 miles. I rode very slowly on the grounds that I knew that bits of my body would be getting exercised for the first time in a long time. I did ache for the first few days and took it as easy as I could to begin with.

I think the advice you have been given is great, but one things strikes me by your statement. You seem to be interested in the gear you are using and speed you are travelling at. I don't think that is helpful at this stage. Just be interested in enjoying the ride. So what if you have to get off and rest, enjoy the view, take a camera, a flask, a book, whatever. Just enjoy the ride. The rest will come.

Best regards

Chris

Did your doctor discuss different medication with you? I had a very hard time on Atenalol but a friend who happened to be a doctor suggested asking for ''calcium channel antagonists'' which, if suitable, work by dilating the blood vessels rather than suppressing adrenaline. (At least, that's how I understood it from my non-medical background.) I feel much better using these (Felodipine is the brand I'm using) and I find a little adrenaline is a good thing to have on busy roads. It might be worth asking your doctor if this class of drug might be appropriate treatment for you.

Thank you,
I may have to try that ,
see what the sawbones says\
as he is a runner himself .

I was on some blood pressure medication that was making my mouth constantly dry and also making me feel bad. I mentioned the calcium channel antagonists to my Dr. and he prescirbed one for me. It is at least making me feel better. I take it along with a couple of other medications . We are having a hard time getting my BP down to an acceptable level still though. My Dr. added another medication to the mix today so maybe that will help. I have lost 17 lbs by trying to ride at least 10 miles a day and eating healthier. Thanks for mentioning that type drug.
