Cheers Tomba – as it happens, I stumbled across the SBS Sportive. I think I'd only do one in April though, so now I have options!

What is a "Sportive" anyway? Should amateur just-for-fun-and-to-save-money-on-the-commute cyclists be entering such events?

That statement includes me and i'll be doing it. I was originally going to do the 65 but might do the 100 now they've changed the cut of time from 7 to 8 hours.

"Gradually"... got it

I wasn't planning on entering the 100 miles, rather "just" the 100km – so I guess I wouldn't have 2 major climbs. Unless of course I man up and go for the imperial ton ^_^

I think once I start doing some longer weekend routes, I'll get the hang of pacing myself. Hopefully. Good advice about fuel too – I usually only take water on my commute, and I've never been near an energy drink! When I did my 27 miles (1hr 45) I deliberately stopped about 50 minutes in for a cereal bar, but I'm not sure it was really necessary. As I up the distances to 30, 40, 50 miles I know I will need to think seriously about topping up whilst riding (and stopping for cake too ), but there's probably 1001 threads about that already... I'm aware that even the 100km could burn up a serious amount of calories, so it's something that I'll definitely be thinking about, and doubtless asking more questions here too!

Really?!

Sounds like a great idea – I've always cycled solo, so a spot of company (or even a wee group ride) once the weather warms up might be good preparation!
I am new to cycling and riding an MTB at the moment but a road bike is in order for April. Riding on my own and would like to ride in a small group so count me in (live in Sauchie)

.... Once the spring comes maybe we could organise a Clackmannanshire ride out over the Dukes Pass?

Just post it up on the CC and Informal Rides section, giving date, time, route and see who turns up !

(I think Seamab just volunteered - so he''ll need to ride fixed .... :bicycle: )

Nice one Scoosh. It has been quiet on the CC Ecosse rides for a while now. Now all i need to determine is when Spring will come! I'm currently in turbo hibernation.

All I can add to the excellent advice already given is that distances are scarey until you've ridden them, especially if you finish in fairly good shape

Only three years ago I started riding again after packing it in to take my wife's place on the London to Brighton charity ride, I was terrified of the thought of 50 odd miles, in the end it was rather easy, and my current 'limit' is more like 130miles

As the distances get longer you might find out things about your bike setup that isn't quite right, leading to soreness and aches and pains, so longer distances are good to try and detect and correct such things, usually very easy once you've worked out the cause

And learning when to rest, eat, drink etc etc, that's very much a work in progress for me although I do have the bike right enough now that I don't get sore

Anyway, get stuck in in short, I can;t help with hills, I bloody hate them, although again, once you've got up one you know what you're dealing with next time and you know what you're capable of

Thanks Tynan - I appreciate the input  It will be interesting to see what happens (if anything) as I increase the miles, and if I do need to tweak the bike setup. Looking forward to getting stuck in, and hope to be back commuting within the next few weeks.

I've also signed up for the 75 miler which, being in June, will be roughly a year since I started cycling again, Hopefully I'll be ready for it - biggest ride so far is about 50 miles .
